Blazer Baseball to Host Auburn Tigers in Scrimmage on Oct. 26

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team will host Auburn University in a 11-inning, fall scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

"We are excited to host Auburn Baseball for this scrimmage," Blazer head coach Jan Weisberg said.  "We have completed our second week of full team practice and will have three dates against outside competition. Having Auburn come to Valdosta is a great opportunity for our players to compete against a high-caliber opponent, while also allowing local sports fans to see an SEC team in action.  I want to thank Auburn head coach Butch Thompson for his willingness to come here in my first year.  We have been friends a long time, and I have immense respect for him and the way he leads his young men.  Not many SEC teams would be willing to travel to play a Division II opponent in the fall, and we thank him for making this day possible."

The gates will open at 1 p.m. and admission is free. Following the game, both teams will be available for photos and autographs, while kids have an opportunity to run the bases and take ground balls.

Weisberg is entering his first season at the helm of the Blazer baseball program. Coach Weisberg was hired as head coach of the Blazers on July 31, 2024, following a 17-year stint leading the Birmingham Southern Panthers.  This past spring, Weisberg guided BSC to the NCAA Division III College World Series quarterfinals for a magical run as the school closed its doors in the spring.  During his time in Birmingham, Weisberg went 544-209-1 overall.

Auburn head coach Butch Thompson is in his ninth season leading the Tigers, where he has compiled an overall record of 283-213-1. The Tigers are coming off a 27-26 season, where they went 8-22 in SEC play, including a win against the top ranked Razorbacks of Arkansas and a series win against Alabama, who was ranked 21st at the time.
