VALDOSTA, Ga. – Trailing 1-0 with just over four minutes left, Valdosta State junior
Ansley Decenzo barely got a touch on a ball from senior
Courtney Magnan in a bit of a scrum in front of the goal for the equalizing score in a 1-1 tie with West Alabama Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers (3-2-3, 1-2-1 GSC), had a disappointing 2-1 loss to Alabama Huntsville on Friday evening with a goal allowed late, but this time the Blazers turned the tables on UWA and scored the equalizer at the 86:48 mark.
With a 0-0 score through 78 minutes, UWA's Emily Callahan was on the receiving end of Amy Denholm's free kick just outside the box on the right side near the corner flag. Denholm served a nice ball into the mixer and Callahan beat VSU sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake for the score the 1-0 lead at the 79:55 mark. It was Callahan's first score of the season.
Despite the tie, the Blazers had numerous chances and outshot the Tigers 19-10 and 10-4 in shots on target. VSU had multiple good looks, hitting the bar a couple of times, but was just unable to finish prior to Decenzo's goal.
Timberlake made her first start of the season between the pipes and recorded three saves. UWA's goalkeeper Dior Wilson had the one goal allowed and a match-high eight saves. In the second half, senior
Ana Moleka, who finished with a match-high five shots and four on frame, had some chances to spark the Blazers, while senior
Taylor Morris finished with three shots and two on target. Decenzo had three shots and the goal.
The Blazers continue at home next week entertaining Christian Brothers on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., while Union visits on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
