VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team scored the first goal of the game just 3:08 into the contest, but was unable to hang on as Alabama Huntsville scored the go-ahead goal on a free kick in the 81
st minute handing VSU a 2-1 loss Friday evening at the VSU Soccer Complex.
The Blazers fell to 3-2-2 on the year and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while UAH improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. VSU held a 19-12 lead in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal, while Blazer junior
Molly Wooldridge had a match-high eight shots with four on target.
Blazer junior
Jocelyn Oballe had three shots and one on frame, including the lone VSU score, while senior
Ana Moleka added the assist. Wooldridge streaked down the far side and the ball went off a UAH defender right to Moleka who barely got a touch on it as Oballe put a dribbler past UAH goalkeeper Cece Szopa just over three minutes into the match. It was Oballe's first goal of the season and Moleka's third assist.
VSU kept the pressure on for much of the half as Wooldridge continued to have good looks in the opening stanza, but VSU was unable to convert. Late in the half, Gracie Gustafson scored her second goal of the season as VSU freshman goalkeeper
Tori Vliet tried to clear the ball, but it squirted right to Gustafson who scored the equalizer at the 40:30 mark.
The Blazers held a 12-5 lead in shots in the first half as both keepers had two saves each. Wooldridge had five shots with two on frame in the first stanza.
The second half saw UAH pressure more and began to get more looks. The Blazers had a number of chances, too, with some nifty passing and good chances, but nothing would fall. Szopa had three saves in the second half and five for the contest for the Chargers, while Vliet had three saves for the match and one in the second half.
Following a foul just outside the top of the box on the Blazers, Evelina Gustafsson (no relation to Gracie) took the free kick and put it over the out-stretched hands of Vliet for a 2-1 lead at the 80:34 mark. It was her first goal of the season.
VSU had a pair of good looks from Wooldridge and sophomore
Katherine Kimmel late, but the shots were just wide.
For the Chargers, Carmen Endicott had a team-high five shots with one on frame, while both Gustafson and Gustafsson each had the goals. This marks the fifth-straight game of a one goal difference and the ninth in the 13 all-time meetings between the two teams. VSU now leads the series 8-5 all-time.
VSU returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus West Alabama at the VSU Soccer Complex.
