DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Behind crooked numbers in both the fourth and sixth innings, the Valdosta State baseball team won 11-2 at Embry-Riddle in the second game for both teams of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Clash Saturday morning. VSU plated five runs in the fourth and three in the sixth as the Blazers scored nine-straight runs after ERAU had an early 1-0 lead.
The Blazers improved to 4-1 on the year and won the season series with ERAU, winning three of four games as VSU won two of three in Valdosta last weekend. ERAU fell to 3-3 on the year. VSU concludes the weekend facing Florida Tech on Sunday at 3 p.m., at Embry-Riddle. Fans can access links to live stats and streaming of the game at vstateblazers.com on the baseball schedule page.
The Eagles jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the second as Garrett Bogart began the inning with a single up the middle and Robert Post doubled through the right side for runners at second and third. An RBI ground out to shortstop plated Bogart for a 1-0 lead. VSU had left the bags full in the top of the second inning, prior to the Eagles' run in the bottom of the frame.
ERAU's lead was short lived, however, as the Blazers roared back in the third, fourth and sixth innings for nine unanswered runs. In the third, junior
David Crawford began the frame with a single to center and then stole second. Graduate student
JP Gates doubled to right center, plating Crawford for a 1-1 score.
VSU then plated five runs in the fourth inning on three hits and one error by ERAU. Sophomore
Jovanni Canegitta began the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior
Bryson Gandy singled to left and then junior
Preston Joye doubled both of them home. Crawford then singled through the right side for an RBI as sophomore
Daniel Lavoy, who reached on a sacrifice bunt, scored on an error. Gates tallied the fifth run of the frame with an RBI ground out and a 6-1 lead. Lavoy and Crawford both singled in the sixth and then graduate student
Nick Gonzalez blasted his first home run as a Blazer for a 9-1 score.
VSU senior hurler
Kevin Tomas (1-0) went seven strong innings, allowing six hits, one earned run and fanned four, allowing just one extra-base hit. Junior
Zane Stephens replaced Tomas for the bottom of the eighth. Stephens pitched two innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and fanned two. The Blazer staff has walked just one batter in the two games this weekend so far, while striking out 15.
The Eagles used a one out, RBI triple from Dylan Brazil in the bottom of the eighth for a 9-2 score. Brazil entered the game in the eighth as a pinch-hitter. Stephens fanned Post for the third out of the inning, leaving Brazil stranded at third.
Gandy walked to begin the top of the ninth and Joye notched his third hit of the game for two on with one away. Both would move up a base on a wild pitch sophomore pinch-hitter
Hunter Stowe hit an infield single, scoring Gandy for a 10-2 score. Crawford plated Joye on an RBI ground out for an 11-2 score.
For the game, VSU scored a season-high 11 runs on 14 hits with one error as Joye finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double to earn Guardian Bank Blazer Player of the Game honors, while Crawford was 3 for 6 with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.
