Thiele and Roney named Steel’s Jewelry Athletes of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga.- Blazer football graduate student Estin Thiele and VSU volleyball graduate student Mallory Roney were named Steel's Jewelry Athletes of the Week. This is the first Steel's Jewelry Athlete of the Week award for both Thiele and Roney this season.
 
Kicker Estin Thiele scored 16 of the Blazers' 58 points on Saturday as the team won a share of its 10th GSC title in program history with a 58-28 victory over West Georgia.  Thiele went a season-best 3 of 3 in field goals (34, 30, 21) and 7 of 7 in extra-points, while he had seven kickoffs (of 11 total) for 437 yards and a 62.4 average with three touchbacks.  The 16 points moved Thiele into sixth-place all-time in VSU history in scoring with 280 career points. Thiele also received GSC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his electric performance.
 
Mallory Roney had a phenomenal weekend for the Blazer volleyball team, playing in seven total sets over two matches for the week. The Jacksonville, Fla. native tallied 19 kills and only four attack errors, hitting .238 for the stretch. She also tallied four service aces and one assist on offense. Defensively, Roney tallied 16 digs and five total blocks, recording a season high in the category against Montevallo with four total rejections. She also recorded her fifth double-double of the season against the Falcons on senior day with 11 kills and 10 digs.
 
Thiele and the Blazer football team (10-1, 7-1 GSC) host Limestone at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium for the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Roney and the VSU volleyball team are set to host in-state rival West Georgia in the first round of the GSC Volleyball Championship on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. For more information on everything Blazer Athletics, visit vstateblazers.com.
