CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team used a second half goal from junior
Jocelyn Oballe in the 73
rd minute to tie West Georgia in the regular season finale for both teams, 1-1.
The Blazers and Wolves both clinched berths in the conference tournament as the finished the regular season with identical 6-5-2 records, while VSU finished 8-5-4 overall and UWG was 6-6-4 this season. Seeding for the tournament has not been determined yet due to other teams still having matches to play on Sunday. As for Friday evening, the match was tied 0-0 at halftime, but both teams had chances in the half as Oballe hit the bar in the 29
th minute as UWG had three shots in the half, while VSU had two shots. Neither team had a save in the opening stanza, while VSU had three corner kicks and UWG had two corner pieces.
The second half saw the offense pickup a bit as UWG's Jade Butcher had the first shot and save of the match as Blazer sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake came up with the stop at the 52;28 mark. UWG then had three more shots and saves in quick succession, before Kenna Kay scored at the 62:56 mark for the opening goal of the match.
VSU did not panic, however, as Oballe had a shot at the 68:05 mark and then found the back of the net at the 72:19 mark to level the match at 1-1. From there, the VSU offense gained some traction as senior
Ana Moleka had a shot, as did junior
Samantha Worley. Senior
Taylor Morris had a shot and save from Haley Brinkman at the 85:18 mark and Moleka had another shot as did junior
Victoria Bahr at the 88:25 mark for the final shot of the contest.
The Blazers finished with nine shots and three on target, while UWG had ten shots and six on frame. Timberlake had five saves in the second half, while Brinkman had two stops in the final stanza. Both teams finished with four corner kicks.
Oballe finished with three shots and one on frame with the equalizing goal to lead the Blazers, while Butcher had three shots and one on frame for UWG and Kay scored on her only shot attempt.
VSU now is 7-5-3 all-time against UWG and 4-1-2 in Carrollton. UWG continues to lead the Red Clay Rivalry Series 2.5 to 1 as UWG finished higher in both men's and women's cross country, while VSU won the first of two meetings in volleyball in Carrollton in September to earn half a point and the tie Friday evening is half a point for each school.
