CLINTON, Miss. – A goal in the 80
th minute sealed the Blazers' fate as Valdosta State fell to Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the GSC Women's Soccer Championship, ending their season.
The Blazers drop to 0-9-1 all-time versus the Choctaws, as Mississippi College advances to the semifinals versus the winner of Lee and West Georgia.
Mississippi College outshot Valdosta State 11-6, but both teams had their chances, as each team had four shots on goal.
The first half started off as a defensive battle, as both teams were battling back and forth. The first shot didn't occur until seven and a half minutes in by Mississippi College that missed high and left. Sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake came up with a one of her three saves in the 17
th minute mark, as the score stayed 0-0. As the first half inched along, VSU was starting to get some chances, as junior defender
Molly Muenchen got the Blazers first shot on goal in the 34
th minute. A few minutes later in the 37
th minute, sophomore
Hunter Wallace had a crack at it, but MC's keeper got her second save in the half. Both teams went back to locker room with a 0-0 tie.
The second half kicked off and VSU came out firing, junior
Molly Wooldridge got a shot on goal early, but MC's keeper was able to keep it away. Valdosta State had two more shots within the first 15 minutes, but the MC defense blocked the attempts. Both teams were fighting for positioning, as there was a total of 18 fouls and three yellow cards in the match. After a plethora of subs in the 79
th minute, the Choctaws were able to get on the board with a goal from Mary Ella White to make the score 1-0. The Blazers had a few free kicks at the end, but were never able to muster a goal as the Blazers fell 1-0.
