CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team fought for 90 minutes, but came up on the short end of a 3-0 loss Friday evening at No. 10 Lee University. The Blazers now turn their sights to a match at Shorter in Rome, Ga., on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Blazers fell to 6-4-3 overall and 4-4-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Lee improved to 9-0-3 and 7-0-1 in GSC play. The Blazers finished with seven shots and three on target and were shutout for the second time this season, while Lee had ten shots and seven on frame for the match. VSU sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake had four saves in the match, while junior Victoria Bahar had a team-high two shots on target.
Lee, was led by four shots and three on frame, including one goal from Alaysia Nye, while two other players scored goals for the Flames.
The Flames found the momentum early as Nye scored her goal with an assist from Ashley Eulo just 9:08 into the contest. VSU's defense stiffened as the game remained 1-0 at halftime. During the first half, Bahr had a good look at the 21:26 mark, but goalkeeper Abby Whitcomb was up to the challenge for the save.
In the second half, Lee's Kate Dirkse scored on a penalty kick at the 59:23 mark, and, just 20 seconds later, Bahr had a chance with her own PK, but Whitcomb made the save, once again, preserving the clean sheet. In the 85
th minute, Eulo scored a goal with an assist from Katie Wilson for the 3-0 margin.
Following the match on Sunday, the Blazers return home to host Spring Hill College next Friday evening at 7 p.m., followed by Senior Day on Sunday versus West Florida at 1 p.m.
