VALDOSTA, Ga. – Playing as an individual, Valdosta State graduate student
Wesley Hanson carded a final round 72 Saturday on the par 72, 7,420-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta to finish tied for 48
th at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Super Regional with a 220 score for 54-holes.
Hanson, a native of Macon, Ga., capped a standout career for the Blazers as he competed in three NCAA postseasons, twice with the team (2019 and 2021) and this season as an individual. He finished the season with 11 tournaments and 33 rounds, while recording 31 rounds in the 70s.
For his career, Hanson has been outstanding both in the classroom and on the course as he is a two-time GSC Men's Golf Champion Scholar-Athlete in 2021 and 2020, while earned GSC Academic Honor Roll accolades and GSC All-Academic honors multiple times. In 2019-20, he earned Third Team Academic All-America® as selected by CoSIDA honors, marking the first Blazer men's golfer to achieve that in program history. On the course, Hanson played in 37 tournaments for 107 rounds with a career 75.15 stroke average. He fired a low-round of 66 for his career and 22 rounds of par or better during his five years as a Blazer.
He opened the tournament with a 74 on Thursday and then began his round on Friday, before two weather delays postponed many of the golfers to have to finish the second round and play the third round both on Saturday. For Saturday's third round, Hanson carded four birdies, four bogeys and ten pars. He almost recorded an eagle for his final hole (No. 18) as a Blazer Saturday afternoon. He finished the championship with seven birdies and one eagle on No. 2 in the second round.
For the championship as a whole, No. 10 Limestone won by ten strokes over top-ranked Barry as the Saints finished 17-under 847, while the Buccaneers were 7-under for an 857. No. 3 Lee and No. 8 North Georgia tied for third at 4-under 860, while No. 9 Georgia Southwestern finished fifth at even par 864 and No. 15 Florida Southern finished sixth with an 866 score.
The top six teams advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, Mich., May 16-20. In addition, the top two individuals from non-advancing teams also qualify for the national championship round as West Georgia's No. 6 Austin Fulton finished 7-under with a 209 on rounds of 66, 74, 69 and King's Samuel Trueba finished 6-under 210 as he tied for third on rounds of 69, 72, 69. Trueba won in a playoff over West Florida's Patrick Poate, 5-6 on the first playoff hole.
Top-ranked golfer A.J. Ewart of Barry finished 13-under 203 (69, 68, 66) to win medalist honors, while Limestone's No. 41 Pontus Samuelsson and North Georgia's No. 14 Evan Thompson also tied with Trueba and Poate for third.
