MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team battled back from a 1-0 deficit after doubles to defeat Montevallo in the 4/5 matchup of the 2022 Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Championship Quarterfinal, 4-2. VSU, the No. 5-seed, now will battle top-seeded West Alabama on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
UM (10-9) won two of the three doubles matches with Blazer freshmen duo of
Magda Tuells Bonet and
Natalie Kohoutkova winning at No. 2, 6-3. The Falcons won the other two doubles matches to claim the early lead.
Heading into singles, Tuells Bonet won at No. 1, defeating Mireia Turro, 6-1, 6-0, for a 1-1 score and then freshman
Adriana Barrio won at No. 4 over Eva Dirr, 6-3, 6-1, for a 2-1 Blazer lead. UM's Emily Hafner won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3, over freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova to even the match at 2-2.
From there, VSU (8-13) took command as Kohoutkova downed Cyba Ozzor, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 for a 3-2 lead and then sophomore
Rachelle Starreveld won at No. 5 over Isabelle Barfoot, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match and avenge a regular season loss for the Blazers to the Falcons. UM won 5-2 in Montavallo, Ala., on Apr. 8.

Andrea Barrio was up one set to none at No. 6 when the match was clinched (7-6, 2-5).
