MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis season came to an end with a 4-0 loss versus top-seeded West Alabama Friday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference Championship Semifinal round.
UWA (18-4) jumped out in front winning two doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. Heden Ly and Hardjia Vidnere won at No. 3 over freshmen duo of
Adriana Barrio and
Andrea Barrio, while Katia de la Garza and Haina Franco won 7-5 at the top spot over sophomore
Rachelle Starreveld and freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova, while Blazer freshmen
Natalie Kohoutkova and
Magda Tuells Bonet were deadlocked 5-5 with Almudena Sanz and Irawan Deewajee.
The Tigers went ahead 2-0 with a win by Franco at No. 3 over Vorbiova, 7-5, 6-0 and then improved to 3-0 as de la Garza won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, over Kohoutkova. UWA then clinched the match as Ly downed Starreveld at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3.
Adriana Barrio won her first set at No. 4 over Deewajee and
Andrea Barrio also won her first set at No. 6 versus Valeria Arevalo when the match was halted as both were in the second set.
VSU finished with an 8-14 record and played 13 teams ranked in the ITA national poll at the time this season.
