VALDOSTA, Ga. – On a beautiful day in South Georgia, the No. 56 Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped its regular season finale against No. 19 Auburn Montgomery, 5-2. With the loss, VSU fell to 7-13 overall and 6-4 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Blazers now prepare for the Gulf South Conference Championship, scheduled for Apr. 28-30 at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. VSU will be the No. 5-seed in the tournament and open with No. 4-seed Montevallo on Apr. 28.
AUM improved to 15-6 on the year and 9-1 in GSC play for second in the league standings and earned the No. 2-seed. The Warhawks opened Wednesday's match winning all three doubles matches, but VSU fought valiantly as Blazer duo of freshmen
Natalie Kohoutkova and
Magda Tuells Bonet gave No. 19-ranked Sofia Navarro and Estefania Garcia everything they could handle, losing in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
Navarro defeated Kohoutkova at No. 1 for a 2-0 AUM lead, but Tuells Bonet upset No. 19 Garcia at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5, for a 2-1 deficit. AUM's Nahia Izco won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, over freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova, but VSU freshman
Andrea Barrio won at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4, over Alba De La Torre, for a 3-2 deficit. The Warhawks clinched the match at No. 5 as Ane Ibarra downed sophomore
Rachelle Starreveld, 6-1, 7-5. Ana Villalvazo won at No. 4 over freshman
Adriana Barrio, 6-4, 6-7, 10-6.
