Blazer Baseball Set to Host Georgia College for Tuesday Matchup

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 19 Valdosta State baseball team is scheduled to host Georgia College Tuesday, April 12, at 5 p.m., for a midweek matchup at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

The Blazers are 22-10 overall and 13-7 in GSC play and head into the midweek game after dropping their weekend series against Gulf South Conference foe, West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga.  Valdosta State opened the series with a 16-3 on Friday, but then struggled in Saturday's doubleheader, falling 14-4 and 7-6.
 
Valdosta State looks to continue its winning streak against GC after the last matchup against the Bobcats on February 17, 2016, when the Blazers came out on top 6-4. Since 2011, the Blazers have three wins and three losses against the Bobcats. VSU leads the all-time series 33-25.  The teams were scheduled to play last week in Milledgeville, Ga., but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
 
The Bobcats enter with a 21-14 record overall and a 10-8 mark in the Peach Belt Conference.  GC dropped two of three to Georgia Southwestern over the weekend, losing 3-1 and 13-10, but won the finale 6-4.  Prior to that, GC had won its last four games, including a sweep of Flagler. 
 
As a team, the Bobcats are hitting .307 with 360 hits, 230 runs scored, 72 doubles, five triples and 25 home runs, while driving in 212.  The team is slugging at a .441 clip and reaching base at a .385 average.  On the bump, the Bobcats boast a 4.27 ERA in 297.1 innings of work.  They have allowed 332 hits, 173 runs – 141 earned, walked 90 and fanned 285.  
 
Offensively, Brandon Bellflower is leading the Bobcats with a .370 batting average with 40 hits, 24 runs scored, 28 RBI, seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, and 16 free passes.  Austin Holloway is second in average at a .353 clip with 41 hits, 18 runs scored, nine doubles, one home run and 22 RBI.  
 
On the mound, Brennan Crooms is leading the Bobcats defensively with 3.21 ERA. Crooms has thrown 42 innings and recorded 37 strikeouts, and has given up 49 hits, 15 earned runs out of 17 runs, 11 batters walked. He has four wins and two losses on the season.  Josh Hudgins leads the team in innings pitched with 63, while David Swenson has a team-high 57 strikeouts on the year.  
 
For the Blazers, junior EJ Doskow leads the team in average at a .427 clip on 47 of 110 from the dish.  He has scored 32 runs for second on the team, while the 47 hits lead the team, while the .427 average also is tops in the GSC. Doskow has a team-high 11 doubles and eight home runs as both lead the team.  He has driven in 43 for the season, while he is slugging .745 for the season and reaching base at a .508 clip.  Redshirt-senior Luke Ard is second in average at a .351 clip on 34 of 97 from the plate. He has nine doubles, one triple, one home run and 25 RBI.  Junior Ryan Romano is third in average at a .310 clip on 36 of 116 from the plate.  He has scored 34 runs to lead the team, while recording four doubles, one triple and 11 RBI.  Junior Bryson Gandy leads the team in stolen bases at 11 for 15 for the season.  
 
As a team, the Blazers are hitting .288 on the year with 215 runs scored, 295 hits, 54 doubles, eight triples, 15 home runs and 181 RBI.  The team is slugging .400, while reaching base at a .382 clip and going 38 of 57 in stolen bases.  
 
On the bump, the Blazers have a 4.27 ERA in 261.1 innings of work.  VSU has fanned 220 and walked 93 for the season as teams are hitting .269 against it.  Senior Elijah Gill leads the team with a 2.18 ERA and a 7-1 record in nine starts.  He has one complete game and one shutout, while combining for another.  Gill leads the team in innings pitched at 53.2, while he has allowed 26 runs on 56 hits, 13 earned runs, walked 15 and fanned a team-high 64.  The opposition is hitting .250 against him.  Junior Kevin Tomas is second in ERA at 3.13, while he is 2-0 in eight starts with 37.1 innings pitched.  Tomas has allowed 36 hits, 13 earned runs, walked ten and fanned 20.  
 
VSU is 19th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 25, while it is 21st in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25.  The Blazers are tied for fifth this week in the latest NCBWA South Region Top Ten, as Tampa leads the poll, followed by Rollins. Delta State sits third in the poll, followed by Florida Southern at fourth and Valdosta State and West Florida are tied for fifth.  Nova Southeastern is seventh, followed by Savannah State, Montevallo, and Saint Leo.  
 
The Blazers continue at home this weekend, hosting Auburn Montgomery for a three-game series, beginning Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a doubleheader set for 1 p.m. for Saturday for Senior Day.
