VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team heads Mississippi College for Gulf South Conference weekend series. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26, beginning at 3 p.m. E.T. and will finish with a single game on Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. E.T.

The Blazers are currently 17-5 overall and 9-2 in GSC while the Choctaws are 10-17 overall and 5-7 in the GSC.

Valdosta State looks to continue its six game win streak as it comes from a midweek 9-6 victory over Georgia Southwestern that followed a home series sweep over Shorter. The Blazers defeated the Hawks in game one 2-0, in game two 11-8, and in game three, 6-2.

The last matchup between the Choctaws and the Blazers was on February 8, 2021, when the Blazers took the victory 12-1. Currently, the Blazers have 15 wins and six losses on Mississippi College with a 5-1 record in Clinton, MS.

Leading the 2022 National College Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II Top 25
poll this week is South Region foe Tampa, who garnered nine, first-place votes and 440 points.  Wingate tallied eight, first-place nods and 439 points for second, while Point Loma had the final first-place nod and 405 points for third.  West Texas A&M sits fourth this week, while Trevecca Nazarene rounds out the top five.  Rollins sits ninth among other teams from the region, while VSU is 19th.  West Florida is among others receiving votes.

Valdosta State is currently third in the South Region Poll and has 57 points in the DII National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. Tampa tops the list with 80 points followed by Rollins (69), Valdosta State (57), West Florida (53), Florida Tech (51), Nova Southeastern (43), Delta State (32), Lynn (14), Savannah State (14), Auburn Montgomery (7), and Montevallo (7).

Nationally speaking, VSU is tied for 27th in sacrifice bunts and third the league with 14, while it is fifth in the GSC and tied for 44th nationally in sacrifice flies with 12. The Blazers are tied for 58th nationally in triples with seven and tied for first in the league.  VSU is second in the GSC with a 3.63 ERA for 22nd nationally. Offensively, junior
EJ Doskow is leading the GSC in batting average (.443), slugging percentage (.771), on base percentage (0.535), on base + slugging percentage (1.306), and third in RBI (30). Defensively,
Elijah Gill is currently first in the GSC with a 1.54 ERA, third in wins with five, second in batters struck out looking with 17, and sixth in total strikeouts with 40.
