No. 40 Blazer Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 40 Valdosta State men's golf team opens the 2022 spring season with the Lincoln Memorial Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate at St. Johns Golf Club in St. Augustine, Fla., Feb. 14-15.  
 
The tournament will consist of three rounds, two on Monday and one on Tuesday, on the par 72, 7,136-yard course.  Fans can access links to live stats by clicking here or on the link to the right of this story.
 
"This event will be a new event and course for the team," VSU head coach Jared Purvis said.  "We look forward to getting started."
 
The 22-team field consists of some of the top golf programs in all of NCAA Division II, including eight programs in the Top 25 of the latest Golfstat rankings, led by No. 3 and host Lincoln Memorial.  No. 11 North Georgia, No. 14 Limestone, No. 17 Belmont Abbey, No. 19 Erskine, No. 20 Georgia Southwestern, No. 21 Lander and No. 25 Barton College complete the portion of the field in the top 25.  In the top 40 of the rankings, an additional six programs are in the field, including No. 26 Queens (N.C.), No. 28 Tusculum, No. 30 Newberry, No. 32 Montevallo, No. 37 Flagler and No. 40 Valdosta State.  
 
Completing the field are No. 45 Coker, No. 46 Lenoir-Rhyne, No. 57 King (Tenn.), No. 58 Wingate, No. 63 Anderson, along with Emmanuel (Ga.), North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan. 
 
Heading into the tournament, the Blazer lineup features graduate student Wesley Hanson at the top spot for the team, followed by sophomore Ryan Pollman, junior Chase Weathers, sophomore Jackson Cross and redshirt freshman Brandon Cho.  
 
In the fall, the Blazers competed in four tournaments and finished a season-best fourth at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Preview at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.  Hanson had a 75.4 stroke average through four tournaments, while Weathers had a 75.33 average, also in four tournaments.  Pollman had the best average of the athletes competing this week at a 74.6 mark competing in four tournaments.  Cross competed in two tournaments in the fall and Cho competed in one tournament and both played as individuals. 
 
Following the tournament, the Blazers head to the Saint Leo Invitational in Dade City, Fla., next week (Feb. 21-22), before returning home to prepare for the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate, scheduled for Mar. 14-15, at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.
