Women’s Tennis Heads to Pensacola for Three Matches

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team heads to Pensacola, Fla., for three matches this weekend.  The Blazers will face both No. 6 West Alabama and West Georgia on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET and 4 p.m. ET, respectively, and will face Mississippi College Monday at 11 a.m. ET at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
 
The Blazers are 4-6 overall and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference play this season.  VSU is coming off two tough losses to a pair of nationally ranked foes in No. 13 Columbus State and No. 6 West Florida last week.  VSU won the doubles point versus Columbus State a week ago Wednesday, with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, while freshman Rachelle Starreveld won at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-4 against UWF's Sara Yigin.
 
UWA enters with an 11-2 record overall and a perfect 7-0 record in GSC play.  The Tigers have won six-straight matches, including a 4-3 victory over No. 6 West Florida and a 7-0 win over Shorter earlier this week.  Against UWF, the Argos won the doubles point and led 3-1 in the team score, before UWA won at Nos. 4-6, including three-set victories by Daryna Hukasian at No. 4, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0 and Thea Yang at No. 5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to clinch the match.   
 
VSU has won seven of the last 11 matches in the series, but UWA has won three-straight.  VSU's last win the series came in 2017 as it downed UWA 6-1 in the GSC Championship match, capping seven-straight wins in the series.  UWA defeated VSU 4-0 in the GSC Semifinal match in 2019 in the previous meeting between the two teams.
 
West Georgia enters the weekend with a 3-6 record overall and a 1-5 mark in the GSC.  The Wolves will face Mississippi College prior to facing VSU Sunday.  UWG lost its last two matches and four of five. 
 
This season the Wolves are 19-5 in singles and 9-27 in GSC play.  Camille Portalier is 7-2 in singles and 4-2 in the GSC at the top spot in the lineup to lead the team.  In doubles, UWG is 9-18 and 4-14 in GSC play. Elle Jones and Kennedy Lewis are 3-1 at No. 2 to lead the team.  VSU has won the last 11 meetings in the series, including 4-0 in Pensacola, Fla., in 2019. 
 
Mississippi College enters with a 3-4 record overall and a 2-2 mark in the GSC.  The Choctaws have won their past two matches with a 5-2 in over Montevallo and a 7-0 victory over Blue Mountain (Miss.). 
 
This season, MC is 22-19 in singles and 12-12 in GSC play, while it is 12-8 in doubles and 6-6 in GSC matches.  Anna Didkovska is 5-2 at No. 3 singles to lead the team, while Paulina Cota is 4-3 in singles and 3-3 at the top spot.  In doubles, Didkovska and Alisa Morozova are 5-2 at No. 2, while Ely Alas and Fernanda Cota are 4-3 at No. 1 doubles to lead the team.
 
VSU is 3-2 in the last five matches with MC – all played in Pensacola.  MC has won the last two in the series, including 4-1 in 2019.
 
Following the weekend, VSU will battle Christian Brothers to conclude the regular season Friday, Apr. 16 at 4 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala., in a makeup match from earlier in the season.  The 2021 Gulf South Conference Championship is set for Apr. 22-24 also in Montgomery, Ala.
