VALDOSTA STATE 6, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS 5
Â
Neither team was able to get things going in the first, but Sessa was able to get the bats going with a single up the middle. A wild pitch sent Sessa into scoring position, followed by a walk to place runners on first and second with two gone. Delnegro was able to teeter the right field line and keep it fair, enough to send Sessa home and give the Blazers the early lead. VSU's lead would quickly go away though, as Christian Brothers was able to send one across the plate as well in the second.
Â
The second inning was just the start for VSU as Lewis jacked one out of the park to give the Blazers the lead once again.
Jowenrick Daantji found first off a high single towards right, with Sessa reaching base on a throwing error which put Daantji 90 feet away.
Jisjar Clotida took advantage of the opportunity and singled to right field to bring Daantji home to extend the lead to 3-1. Back-to-back wild pitches was enough to bring Sessa home and to get Clotida up to third, allowing Teegarden to knock him in for a big four hit, four run inning. The Bucs were able to cut the lead down to three in the bottom of the third with a RBI of its own.
Â
VSU looked to gain even more momentum and get more runs on the board in the fourth, putting the bases loaded with just one out. CBU was able to squeeze out of the inning, leaving the three Blazers stranded. In the following inning, VSU left two more runners on the pads which brought up CBU's offense. Christian Brothers took control of the fifth where it was able to tie things up at five after taking advantage of a few of VSU mistakes.
Â
From there, VSU locked down to try and keep the run total for the Bucs at five. Over the next three innings, the Blazers only gave up two hits, stopping any momentum the Bucs had from tying the ball game up. In the eighth, VSU looked to gain the edge after Lewis doubled down the right field line. After a flyout, Stephens smacked one down the left field line to bring in the go ahead run and put VSU up 6-5.
Â
Barker came in for relief a struck out the first batter he faced in the ninth. The Bucs were able to put runners on first and second with one out, putting the pressure on, but Barker battled through a 0-2 count to fan the second out. The next batter worked towards a full count, where VSU forced a ground out to finish the day with a win.
