Women’s Tennis Season Ends in 4-2 Loss to No. 23 Auburn Montgomery in GSC Quarterfinal; Langenstein Named GSC Women’s Tennis Champion Scholar-Athlete

Birte GSCMONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis season came to an end on Thursday as it dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 23 Auburn Montgomery in the quarterfinal round of the Gulf South Conference Championship.  The Blazers finished the year 6-9, while AUM improved to 10-6.  VSU junior Birte Langenstein was named the GSC Women's Tennis Champion Scholar-Athlete.

The match began with AUM winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles as Tonja Foessmeier and Alba De La Torre won 6-2 over freshman Rachelle Starreveld and junior Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir.  The Warhawks then won at No. 3 doubles with a 6-3 win by Sofia Mustre and Julia Enderink over Langenstein and freshman Julia Saving.  VSU senior Estee Widdershoven and sophomore Eva Rivoal were leading 5-4 in doubles over Maria Casas and Sofia Navarro at the top spot when the second match was clinched.

The Blazers tied the match early in the singles portion as Saving won 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 over Mustre.  The momentum was short lived, however, as AUM regained the lead with a straight-set win from Isabella Pinto over Brynjarsdottir at No. 6, 6-0, 7-5.  AUM took a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Starreveld at No. 3.

Langenstein kept the Blazers within striking distance as she downed De La Torre 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, for a 3-2 deficit.  Rivoal split the first two sets at No. 2 singles with Tonja Foessmeier, 6-2, 2-6, but Foessmeier won the final set 6-3 to clinch the match for the Warhawks.

Following the match, it was announced Langenstein won the GSC Women's Tennis Champion Scholar-Athlete Award.  This is the first time she has won this award and is a native of Ditzingen, Germany, with a 3.93 grade-point average and majoring in International Business and a minor in operations management.  She has earned GSC Academic Honor Roll accolades each of her years at VSU and was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2020.

Langenstein is the second VSU student-athlete to earn the Champion Scholar-Athlete Award this spring in their respective sport as senior men's golfer Wesley Hanson earned the prestigious honor for the second-straight year last week.
