MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis season came to an end on Thursday as it dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 23 Auburn Montgomery in the quarterfinal round of the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Blazers finished the year 6-9, while AUM improved to 10-6. VSU junior
Birte Langenstein was named the GSC Women's Tennis Champion Scholar-Athlete.
The match began with AUM winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles as Tonja Foessmeier and Alba De La Torre won 6-2 over freshman

Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir. The Warhawks then won at No. 3 doubles with a 6-3 win by Sofia Mustre and Julia Enderink over Langenstein and freshman
Julia Saving. VSU senior Estee Widdershoven and sophomore
Eva Rivoal were leading 5-4 in doubles over Maria Casas and Sofia Navarro at the top spot when the second match was clinched.
The Blazers tied the match early in the singles portion as Saving won 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 over Mustre. The momentum was short lived, however, as AUM regained the lead with a straight-set win from Isabella Pinto over Brynjarsdottir at No. 6, 6-0, 7-5. AUM took a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Starreveld at No. 3.
Langenstein kept the Blazers within striking distance as she downed De La Torre 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, for a 3-2 deficit. Rivoal split the first two sets at No. 2 singles with Tonja Foessmeier, 6-2, 2-6, but Foessmeier won the final set 6-3 to clinch the match for the Warhawks.
Following the match, it was announced Langenstein won the GSC Women's Tennis Champion Scholar-Athlete Award. This is the first time she has won this award and is a native of Ditzingen, Germany, with a 3.93 grade-point average and majoring in International Business and a minor in operations management. She has earned GSC Academic Honor Roll accolades each of her years at VSU and was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2020.
Langenstein is the second VSU student-athlete to earn the Champion Scholar-Athlete Award this spring in their respective sport as senior men's golfer Wesley Hanson earned the prestigious honor for the second-straight year last week.
