PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team split two matches on Sunday in Pensacola, Fla., falling 5-2 to No. 6 West Alabama and winning 7-0 versus West Georgia. The Blazers are 5-7 overall and 5-3 in Gulf South Conference play. VSU will close its matches in Pensacola with Mississippi College, Monday morning at 11 a.m. ET.
Against West Alabama, the Blazers came out on fire as senior Estee Widdershoven and sophomore
Eva Rivoal won at No. 1, 6-1, over Sarah Manseri and Heden Ly, while Blazer No. 2 tandem of Junior Hera Bjork Bynjarsdottir and freshman
Rachelle Starreveld won, 6-1 over Haina Franco and Thea Yang to claim the doubles point. At No. 3, Hardja Vidnere and Dayna Hukasian defeated junior
Birte Langenstein and freshman
Julia Saving, 6-3.
Widdershoven won at No. 1 singles over Maseri, 7-5, 6-1, for the only singles victory for the Blazers. Starreveld took Ly to three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 2-6, but came up short. Brynjarsdottir also went three sets with Valeria Arevalo, but dropped the final set, 6-0, after winning the opening set, 6-4, 2-6, 0-6.
Against West Georgia, VSU won all three doubles matches in quick fashion, including a 6-0 victory at No. 2 by Brynjarsdottir and Starreveld over Kennedy Lewis and Perrine Blachon.
In singles, VSU won all six matches with two going the distance. Saving won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4 over Blachon, while Bynjarsdottir won in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 10-2 after the team scoring had already been decided. Starreveld posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Melinda Chrun at No. 3, while Widderhoven won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at the top spot over Camille Ligier. Senior
Amelia Cornwell won at No. 6 over Hayden Rainwater , 6-4, 6-1 to put VSU up 2-0.
