BIRMINGHAM. Ala. – Valdosta State baseball senior David Maberry was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. This marks the first time Maberry has received Player of the Week honors at Valdosta State.
 
Maberry, a native of Shalimar, Fla., knocked down six hits and two homeruns during a weekend series sweep against Montevallo, as he brought in seven runners on his .500 batting average. The senior posted a 1.000 slugging percentage on 12 total bases with a .533 on-base percentage. Staying patient at the plate in the top of the ninth in game one, Maberry drew four balls with the bases jacked to bring in Ralph Morla Jr. to give the Blazers a two-run cushion. His walk helped push runners to the next base where it eventually found another run and had a safe three-run margin. Maberry added yet another crucial run during the second game of the series where he blasted one out of the park right after teammate Nick Lewis did the same. Maberry is no stranger to homeruns as he added his second and third one towards his season stat sheet for second-best on the team. The team leader in hits (24) and RBI (22), Maberry sits at a .421 batting average during 57 at-bats. Maberry ranks fourth in the league with his .421 clip and cracks the top two in hits. His 22 RBI is the best in the conference along with sitting at six in slugging percentage.
 
Maberry and the Blazers are back in action tonight, Tuesday, Mar. 9, to face off against Georgia Southwestern on the road with first pitch at 6 p.m. The Blazers then return home for a weekend series against Union with a doubleheader set for Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can access links to live stats, audio/video streaming, ticket information and more at vstateblazers.com on the baseball schedule page.
