MONTEVALLO, Ala. – On a day where the bats weren't clicking for No. 9 Valdosta State, Montevallo used two runs with two out in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 victory.
Â
VSU (10-2, 8-1 GSC) entered the day winners of ten-straight and looking for the third-consecutive GSC sweep, but struggled offensively with just three hits for the game. VSU had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but was unable to get anything across as the team hit into a pair of fielder's choices on the first and third out of the inning.
Â
Blazer sophomore
Samantha Richards took the loss, falling to 6-2 on the year as she pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs and seven hits. She walked none and fanned four. It was her first loss since the 1-0 opening setback at Flagler on Feb. 5 in the season-opener. VSU junior
Baylee Everson was 2 for 3 for the game and had a stolen base, while senior
Lacey Crandall tallied the other hit. Junior
Nicole Pennington didn't register an at bat, but was walked four times.
Â
Montevallo (6-9, 4-5 GSC) tallied the two runs on seven hits and one error as Mychael McMillan (3-1) pitched a solid game, scattering three hits, walked five and fanned three. VSU didn't have an extra-base hit in the game, while Sunday was the first time VSU had seen McMillan in the series.
Â
The bottom of the second began with Richards getting a pop out to second base, but Avery Witten singled down the left field line and, following the second out and, with a 2-2 count, Brooke Ingram doubled down the left field line for runners at second and third. The Falcons were able to capitalize as Fallon Groves singled up the middle, plating both runners for a 2-0 lead. It marked the first runs VSU had allowed in 14 innings, dating back to the finale of the Mississippi College series on Feb. 28, in a 9-1 victory by the Blazers in six innings.
Â
VSU wouldn't get its next hit until the fifth as Everson hit an infield single, but a fielder's choice got the second out and Pennington walked. Another fielder's choice ended the threat.
Â
Down to their final at bat, Crandall began the seventh with a single to left center and a throwing error on a fielder's choice put two on base with nobody out. McMillan retired the next two batters and Pennington walked for the fourth time to load the bases. Senior
Logan Hill hit into the game-ending fielder's choice as VSU hit into five fielder's choices for the game with four critical outs.  Â
Â
Witten went 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Ingram was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Groves had the winning hit, going 1 for 2 with two RBI. Prior to Sunday's game, Montevallo had hit just .143 for the series on 5 of 35, while recording just one extra-base hit and no runs. Sunday, the Falcons had seven hits with two runs and hit .304 on 7 of 23 from the dish.
Â
In the two losses this season, VSU has hit just .146 on 7 of 48 from the dish with no extra-base hits, while during the ten-game winning streak, it hit .377 on 97 of 257 with 87 runs scored (8.7 runs per game), 13 doubles and 18 home runs. The opposition has hit just .114 with 22 hits, 11 runs scored and six extra-base hits with four doubles and two home runs.
Â
The Blazers return home to begin a ten-game homestand with Union in a three-game series Mar. 13-14 at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park. Â
