Top-Seeded Blazers Clash with Top-Seeded Chargers for GSC Tournament Final Rematch

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 17-ranked Valdosta State men's basketball team will take on Alabama Huntsville in the GSC Tournament Final Sunday for a rematch of last years championship game at University of Montevallo set for 2 p.m. E.T.
 
The men's final will be played at Trustmark Arena on the University of Montevallo campus. No tickets will be available for purchase for the championship game Sunday.
 
VSU (16-4, 14-4 GSC) advanced to its second straight Gulf South Conference Final and seventh in team history after a thrilling 99-89 win over West Georgia Friday night to snap West Georgia's 10-game win streak. The Blazers dominated during the second half where it scored 63 points, led by 25 points from senior Burke Putnam. Putnam recorded his second double-double of the season, shooting eight of 16 (.500) from the field with a career-high 13 rebounds. Jacolbey Owens and GSC Player of the Week Imoras Agee tied with 20 points on the night, both with three balls from beyond the arch. The Blazers didn't see a lead from the 11:49 mark in the first half until the 1:16 point in the second half where Putnam put VSU up after a pair of free throws. Valdosta State was money from the field, shooting a blistering 30 of 51 (.588) from the field with 10 threes. A big component of the semifinal was free throws, where VSU saw the line 37 times and sank 29 while UWG only saw the line 11 times.

VSU and Alabama Huntsville both earned the No. 1 seeds in each division this season. Alabama Huntsville is 14-2 overall and 12-1 in league play and narrowly beat Lee Friday night 54-52 to advance to its third straight GSC Tournament Final. After the pair of wins the Blazers had last weekend versus West Florida, it moved up on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II rankings to 21 and moved to 17 in the Division II Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) rankings. In the NABC rankings, Alabama Huntsville is ahead of VSU at 11. Alabama Huntsville sits at six in the D2SIDA poll while Lee sits at 23.
 
The Blazers learned Wednesday afternoon that it sits fifth in the final NCAA South Region Rankings, announced by the NCAA. Flagler College of the Peach Belt Conference leads the rankings, having just one loss on the season. Alabama Huntsville is in the two spot and leads GSC schools, followed by Georgia College at three, Lee at four, Valdosta State in the fifth spot, Georgia Southwestern at six, with West Georgia and Union (Tenn.) rounding out the final two spots. The Regional Championship will feature the top-six regionally ranked teams, with the winners of the GSC and PBC conference tournaments receiving an automatic bid to the regional. The remaining four spots will be at-large qualifiers.
 
The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 7 at 10:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on NCAA.com. The NCAA South Region Championship will be held at The Complex, Mar. 13-16.
 
Alabama Huntsville (14-2, 12-1 GSC), led by second year head coach John Shulman, escaped with a win against No. 2E-seed Lee on Friday 54-52 to advance to the final. The Chargers were led by 16 points from senior Sam Orf who went three of 10 (.300) from the field with seven rebounds and eight free throws. UAH shot 17 of 51 (.333) from the field while shooting 27 percent from deep.
 
On the year, the Chargers average 73.2 points per game off its .456 field goal percentage while going .351 from beyond the arch. The Chargers control the boards compared to its opposition as it comes down with 35.6 rebounds compared to its opponents 32.5 for a positive margin. The Chargers rank fifth in the GSC in average points per game, 13 points behind the Blazers who sit on top. The Chargers find itself in the top four in the league in field goal percentage defense with .440 and are in the bottom half in field goal percentage with its .456. Alabama Huntsville makes, on average, 9.8 three-point field goals per game for best in the GSC. Orf was named GSC West Division Player of the Year where he averages 17.5 points per game with a 280-point total with 4.9 boards per game. Orf leads the West Division in total points as he shoots a blistering 104 of 209 from the field (.498) and has made 30 threes this year.
 
The Blazers are 7-13 during its last 20 matchups against the Chargers where it averages 76.6 points. During the GSC Tournament Final duel last year, the Chargers got the best of the Blazers and upset them 91-82. VSU was led by Clay Guillozet who played the entire ballgame, shooting nine of 14 for 26 points and six rebounds. Putnam and Agee saw action during the championship game last year, both recording nine points and a combined seven rebounds. Cam Hamilton and Jakari Gallon were the other two returners that saw action during last year's game as Hamilton was three of five from the field for eight points while Gallon saw three minutes on the court. Orf returns after his 14-point, one rebound performance from the tournament game last year, shooting six of 12 from the field. The Blazers were outshot by the Chargers by 10 percent from the field as VSU went 30 of 62 (.484) from the field with the Chargers going 31 of 53 (.585) from the field.
 
Agee, the Blazers leading scorer, ranks second on the GSC leaderboard in total points scored with 321 and third in average points per game with 17.8. Agee leads the league in field goals made with 119 and is 12th in field goal percentage. Behind Agee is Hamilton with 299 total points which is good for ninth among all GSC players and is second in three-pointers made with 53. Hamilton is also in the top 10 in field goals made with 103 and is seventh with his .490 mark from the field. Putnam is right behind, sitting at number six with 294 points with his 97 field goals.
