VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Volleyball team defeated Christian Brothers this evening for its Inaugural Youth Volleyball night at Valdosta High School. The Blazers improved to 12-17 overall and 5-8 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Buccaneers fell to 2-26 overall and 0-13 in the GSC.
First Set:
The Blazers came out firing on cylinders and took the early 5-1 lead, but the upset-minded Buccaneers roared back and tied the set at 12 followed by a timeout by the Blazers. Out of the timeout, VSU regrouped and responded with a 5-0 run and a timeout by CBU with the Blazers enjoying a 17-12 lead, as redshirt freshman
Ramsey Marshall had a string of four-straight serves. In the nip-and-tuck set, CBU pulled within 20-18, but VSU freshman
Jojo Smith served out the set for the 25-18 victory
VSU had one of its strongest sets of the season, hitting .400 with a match-high 17 kills in 35 swings, while CBU hit .111 with 10 kills and six errors in 36 attacks.
Second Set:
CBU jumped out to its largest lead of the match at 10-5 and a timeout by the Blazers. A kill from sophomore Kennedy Deluca started a Blazer rally and pulled VSU within 13-9, but the Bucs extended the lead back to five at 15-10. VSU used another mini-run pulling within 17-16 on a kill from senior
Tammy Reyes-Perez and a miscue forcing a timeout by the visitors. Deluca added a kill for a 19-18 deficit and an error by CBU tied the set at 19.
Graduate student
Grace Daugherty came up with a huge kill for a 22-21 deficit and then, moments later, freshman Cailtin Warnshuis tied the set at 23 for the second timeout by the Bucs. Out of the timeout, Smith and Daugherty each had kills for the 25-23 victory.
Third Set:
VSU scored the first three points of the third set to set the tone early and built an 8-4 lead capped with a kill from Smith. Back-to-back aces from Reyes-Perez swelled the lead to 14-7, but the Bucs erased the deficit with an 8-1 run and a 15-15 score.
Once again, the Blazers didn't sweat as Marshall served four-straight times and the Blazers used a 5-1 rally for a 20-16 lead with a timeout from CBU. VSU kept the Bucs at arm's length the rest of the way for a 25-19 victory to win the match.
Inside the Numbers:
VSU finished the match with 45 kills and hit .317 with 13 errors and 101 swings, while CBU hit .103 for the match with 33 kills, 22 errors and 107 swings. Smith had a match-high 18 kills and hit .515 in 33 swings, while Reyes-Perez had 36 assists and nine digs. Redshirt freshman
Lyara Rosario had 13 digs and Marshall added 12. Daugherty finished with eight kills and had two solo blocks and one assisted block.
CBU's Tia Rizvi had a team-high 11 kills and hit .231 in 26 swings, while Aldon Pilz had 27 assists.

The Blazers are back in action Sunday, Nov. 7, in The Complex, for Senior Day as they face the Union Bulldogs at 1 p.m.
