Blazer Volleyball Falls to Union in Five-Set Match for Senior Day

Box Score Match Information – Valdosta State vs. Union 
Score: Valdosta State 2, Union 3 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23, 31-29, 15-10)
Records: VSU 12-18 (5-9 GSC), UU 18-12 (9-5 GSC)
Location: The Complex 
 
VALDOSTA, Ga. -  The Valdosta State volleyball team fell to the Union Bulldogs this afternoon in a thrilling five-set match on Senior Day in the Complex. The Blazers celebrated six senior athletes while senior Tammy Reyes-Perez recorded a double double and tallied 14 digs and 52 assists while topping 1,000 assists on the year. 
 
First Set: 
VSU started the first set off strong with a 5-0 lead as Union answered back and tied the set at nine and took the lead by one. 
 
The Blazers fought back and retook the lead 17-13, but the Bulldogs went on a five-point rally and led the Blazers 19-17. 
 
The set went back and forth between the Blazers and the Bulldogs as it became tied at 20 and 21 as the Blazers rallied two kills and took the first set 25-22. 
 
Second Set: 
Union took the lead 3-1 the second set as the Blazers fought back and tied the set at six. 
 
The score had its seventh tie of the set at eleven as the Bulldogs took the lead 17-14 with a service ace. 
 
The Blazers rallied back with kills and a service ace as they tied the set at 21 and took the lead 23-21. 
 
Union answered again as they tied the score at 23 and forced the set over 25. The Bulldogs rallied and came out on top of the second set, 26-24. 
 
Third Set: 
VSU started the third set ahead 5-3 and continued to lead until Union tied the set at nine. 
 
The set continued to go back and forth between the Blazers and the Bulldogs at 19 until the Blazers gained a three-point lead at 24-21. 
 
Union held the Blazers at 24 as they scored two points and brought the score to 24-23, but VSU recorded a kill and took the third set 25-23. 
 
Fourth Set
The Blazers started the fourth set off 4-0 and continued to lead as they gained a five-point difference from the Bulldogs, 10-5. 
 
Union answered back and tied the game at 13 and again at 15 and continued to take control of the set at 23-21. 
 
The set continued to go over 25 as the score became tied at 28 before Union took the set 31-29 and forced a fifth set. 
 
Fifth Set
Union took the lead in the fifth set 5-3 as the Blazers fought back and tied the set at six while they took control at 8-6. 
 
The Bulldogs answered back and tied the score at nine as they continued their rally and took the fifth set 15-10 and the match 3-2. 
 
Inside the Numbers: 
The Blazers tallied 75 digs, 64 kills, 61 assists, ten blocks, and six service aces for the match. Leading VSU in kills was freshman Jojo Smith (21), redshirt freshman Caitlin Warnshuis (12), and freshman Kylie Stroehlein (11). Digs for the Blazers were led by redshirt freshman Lyara Rosario (24), senior Tammy Reyes-Perez (14), and Stroehlein (9). Reyes-Perez also tallied 52 assists, three blocks, and one service ace. Blocks were led by Warnshuis (4) and senior Grace Daugherty (3). Rosario led the Blazers with three aces, followed by senior Megan Stanton with two.

The Blazers are back in action on the road Friday, Nov. 12, in Montgomery, Ala., as they face Auburn Montgomery at 7 p.m. E.T.
