MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Valdosta State volleyball team fell to Montevallo in a four-set match for the first match of a weekend road trip.

First Set:
The Falcons scored the first three points of the match as they recorded a service error and gave the Blazers the ball as they looked to start a rally. An ace by graduate
Deona Mims tied the game at three but was followed by a Falcons rally as the brought the score to 8-3.

Followed by a VSU timeout, the Blazers continued to trail as freshman
Jojo Smith recorded three kills for a 14-8 deficit. Montevallo continued its strong start to the match for a 25-12 opening set victory

Second Set:
Following two quick points by the Blazers to start the second set, UM responded with a 5-0 run for a 5-2 lead. The Blazers answered and tied the set at seven, but the Falcons regained the lead at 12-10.

VSU took a 17-13 lead on kills from Smith and junior
Zoey Chilcote and forced a Falcons timeout. The Falcons continued to trail and slowly chipped away at the deficit as VSU called its two timeouts down the stretch. With a 24-22 lead, VSU took the game point for a 25-22 victory to level the match. Â

Third Set:
Montevallo started the second set off in front as the lead 11-3 as Valdosta called a timeout to stop the rally. The Blazers fought back with a 12-3 run as they brought the score to 14-13 with kills from Smith, Daugherty, and reigning GSC Freshman of the Week

A seven-point rally by the Falcons brought the score to 21-14, as a service error gave the ball back to the Blazers as they looked to scratch back as UM won the third set, 25-16. Â

Fourth Set:
Starting off the fourth set, the Falcons, once again, held the early lead at 5-0 and a timeout by the Blazers. VSU rallied and pulled within 13-9.

Following the final Blazer timeout of the set, VSU recorded three kills by sophomore
Keelyn Williams as the Falcons called a timeout at 15-14. The Blazers continued to fight back with kills by Smith and junior Kennedy Deluca as they pulled within 22-19, but the Falcons go on to take the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Inside the Numbers:
For the match, VSU tallied 49 digs, 40 digs, 39 assists, 11 blocks, and four aces. Leading the Blazers in kills was Smith (18), Mims (7), and Warnshuis (5). Rosario led with 17 digs, followed by Reyes-Perez with 10 and junior
Erin Ergle with seven. Reyes-Perez also added 34 assists and three blocks. Deluca led with five blocks followed by Mims with three. Senior
Rebecca Sills led in service aces with two, as Mims recorded one.
