Blazer Hoops Named Preseason No. 10 in NABC Top 25

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's basketball team was selected No. 10 in the nation to begin the 2021-22 season in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II preseason poll. 
 
The Blazers received a total of 199 points, coming in just behind Lubbock Christian (203) in ninth. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State tops the poll with 397 points, followed by Flagler (349) and West Texas A&M (317) in third. 
 
Gulf South Conference foe Alabama Huntsville joins Valdosta State as the only two GSC teams highlighted in the top 25. The Chargers sit 20th receiving 98 points. Last season, VSU defeated Alabama Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship, 75-70. 
 
VSU went 17-5 last year and 14-4 in conference play and appeared in its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, a fifth consecutive GSC regular season, and the program's first Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship. 
 
Blazer returners Cam Hamilton and Jacolbey Owens were selected to the Preseason All-GSC Team, while VSU was also selected No. 1 in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Hamilton, a native of Charlotte, N.C., went 107-227 (.471) from the field and rounded out the season with the third-most field goals made on the Blazer's offense. Hamilton averaged 3.5 rebounds per game while recording 33 assists, three blocks, and 41 steals and averaging 14.2 points per game.
 
Owens, a 6-1 guard from Warner Robins, Ga., started in 11 games for the Blazers last season and went 92-176 (.523) from the field for fourth on the team in made field goals. Owens averaged 3.1 rebounds on the season while recording 58 assists, four blocks, 29 steals, and averaging 12.2 points per game.
 
VSU prepares for the 2021-22 season opener at the GSC/SIAC Basketball Challenge in Fort Valley, Ga., facing off against Clark Atlanta on November 12 at 5 p.m. The Blazers will then turn around and play Fort Valley State Saturday, November 13 at 5 p.m. before finally returning home to host Clayton State on November 16 at 7 p.m. in the Complex.
