Men’s Golf Finishes 18th at Southern Tide Intercollegiate

MILTON, Ga. – The No. 34 Valdosta State men's golf team finished 18th at the Southern Tide Intercollegiate on the par 72, 6,966-yard Atlanta National Golf Club with a 54-hole score of 924.  No. 2 Barry won the team title with a 54-hole score of 868. 
 
Following Barry, No. 24 and host Limestone finished second with an 869 score, while Carson-Newman, who was leading the 20-team field heading into the final round, finished third with a final round 308 for an 874 score.  No. 3-ranked South Carolina-Aiken finished fourth (875), followed by No. 7 Arkansas Tech at an 877 score. 
 
Other than Barry and Limestone on Tuesday, everyone else really struggled as the remaining 18 teams all shot over 300 for their team score.  Barry finished with a final round 297, while Limestone carded a 294 to complete the tournament. 
 
Among the Gulf South Conference teams in the field, No. 5 Lee finished sixth with an 886 score and No. 8 West Florida finished tied for seventh with an 891 score with non-GSC opponents No. 1 Lincoln Memorial and No. 14 North Georgia.  No. 10 Saint Leo rounded out the top ten with an 899 score.
 
Individually, Jonathan Nielsen of Carson-Newman took home medalist honors with a 7-under 209 on round of 69, 63 and 77.  He bested USCA's No. 5-ranked Leo Johansson by two strokes (69-67-75=211).  There was a tie for third between Erskine's Alberto Dominguez and Arkansas Tech's Andre Jacobs.  Dominguez carded a final round 71 to jump up eight spots to a top three finish. 
 
The Blazers had their toughest round of the season, carding a 329 on Tuesday as sophomore Ryan Pollman led the way with a 228 score on rounds of 73, 78 and 77 to tie for 52nd.  Junior Davis Smith tied for 67th with a 232 score on rounds of 74, 74 and 84, while both graduate student Wesley Hanson and senior Gage Smith tied for 80th each with a 238 score.  Hanson carded rounds of 79, 81 and 78, while G. Smith fired 76, 72 and 90.  Junior Chase Weathers finished tied for 86th with a 239 score on rounds of 74, 74 and 91. 
 
The fall season for the Blazers is complete as the team returns to the course in February with the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate in St. Augustine, Fla., at St. John's Golf Club, Feb. 14-15.  VSU will have five tournaments in the spring, including the annual Southeastern Collegiate at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, scheduled for Mar. 14-15.  VSU also will host the 2022 NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional at Kinderlou Forest, May 5-7.
