Blazer Volleyball Falls to Barry and Lynn in First Day of South Region Crossover

Match Information – Valdosta State vs. Barry  
Score: Valdosta State 0, Barry 3 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19)
Records: VSU 11-12 (4-5 GSC), Barry 10-6 (5-6 SSC)
Location: Winter Haven, Fla. 
  
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Valdosta State Blazer volleyball team fell to Barry and Lynn in the first day of the Gulf South Conference/ Sunshine State Conference Regional Crossover. 
  
First Set:  
Barry took the lead the first set 4-1, scoring off Buccaneers kills as the Blazers continued to fight back and brought the score to 4-3 with a kill by graduate Deona Mims and a Barry hitting error. 
 
The Buccaneers took a five-point lead, 15-10, and stayed out front the whole set. VSU went on a four-point rally scoring with kills by redshirt freshman Caitlin Warnshuis and Mims as they still trailed 19-18. The Buccaneers eventually took the first set 25-21. 
  
Second Set:  
Starting off the second set, Barry took the lead again 5-1 scoring off kills and VSU attacking errors. 
 
VSU brought the Buccaneers lead to one with kills by freshman Jojo Smith and a service ace by junior Erin Ergle, 5-4. 
 
The Blazers tied the match at eight as Warnshuis recorded another kill, assisted by senior Tammy Reyes-Perez, but the Buccaneers took the lead again16-12. 
 
Barry went on a scoring rally and took the set to 22-15 and continued to take the second set 25-17.  
  
Third Set:  
The third set became tied at four and then again at seven before the Buccaneers took the lead 11-8.  
 
VSU went on a three-point rally scoring from Barry attacking errors but still trailed 15-12. 
 
Freshman Ah'Miah Harris, Smith and Warnshuis each recorded kills, but it was not enough as the Buccaneers proceeded to take set three 25-19 and the match 3-0. 
  
Inside the Numbers:  
The Blazers tallied 47 digs, 33 kills, 29 assists, five blocks, and four aces. Smith led the Blazers with 12 kills followed by Warnshuis with 11 and Mims with seven. Redshirt freshman Lyara Rosario led with 20 digs as Reyes-Perez followed with eight and redshirt freshman Ramsey Marshall with five. Reyes-Perez also tallied 25 assists and Ergle recorded three service aces followed by Smith with one.

Match Information – Valdosta State vs. Lynn  
Score: Valdosta State 1, Lynn 3 (25-19, 25-17, 25-9, 25-20)
Records: VSU 11-13 (4-5 GSC), Lynn 12-7 (8-3 SSC)
Location: Winter Haven, Fla. 
   
First Set:  
The Blazers took the lead the first set 3-0 with kills by freshman Jojo Smith and a service ace by graduate Deona Mims.  
 
VSU continued to lead as Smith rallied three kills in a row and brought the score to 8-3. 
 
The Fighting Knights tallied two points from VSU attacking errors, score 13-9 as freshman Caitlin Warnshuis recorded a kill and junior Erin Ergle recorded two service aces, 18-11. 
 
Lynn continued to fight back but were unsuccessful as the Blazers took the first set 25-19. 
  
Second Set:  
The second set was tied at one as graduate Grace Daugherty tallied a kill until Lynn went on a scoring spree and went ahead, 6-1. 
  
The Blazers recorded points with kills from Smith, Daugherty, and freshman Caitlin Warnshuis but VSU still trailed 11-9. 
 
The score became 21-12 in favor of the Fighting Knights as they scored off kills and VSU errors. 
 
The Blazers continued to fight back but it was not enough as Lynn took the second set 25-17. 
 
Third Set: 
Lynn started the third set off strong, 7-1, mainly scoring off VSU errors. 
 
The Blazers rallied a few points with kills by Warnshuis and Smith but still trailed 11-6. 
 
The Fighting Knights went on a rally and recorded five kills and sent the score to 19-6 as they went on and took the third match 25-9. 
 
Fourth Set: 
The fourth set became tied at six and again at nine before Lynn took a four-point lead as they scored with a kill and VSU attacking errors, 13-9. 
 
The set began to go back and forth between the Blazers and the Fighting Knights with VSU scoring from kills by Daugherty, Warnshuis, Smith, and sophomore Keelyn Williams as VSU tied the match at 18. 
 
Lynn took the lead 21-19 and proceeded to take the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1. 
  
Inside the Numbers:  
VSU recorded 47 digs, 41 kills, 41 assists, five aces, and three blocks. Daugherty led the Blazers in kills with 12 as Warnshuis and Smith followed with ten each. Redshirt freshman Lyara Rosario led with 17 digs and junior Erin Ergle followed with eight and senior Tammy Reyes-Perez with six. Reyes Perez also added 38 assists, one service ace, and one block. Leading the Blazers in aces was Ergle with three as Mims tallied one. Warnshuis led with two blocks with Daugherty adding one.

The Blazers continue GSC/SSC Regional Crossover play tomorrow Saturday, October 23 as they face Florida Southern at 2:30 pm.
