ROME, Ga. – In probably one of the most thrilling matches of the weekend, on Saturday, Valdosta State men's tennis doubles team of sophomores
Luca Mack and Rodrigo Carvalho advanced to the ITA Cup Championship match with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (13-11) victory over top-seeded Columbus State duo of Javier Cueto Ramos and Alvaro Regalado.
In a stellar match from the start, both teams played outstanding as it was nip-and-tuck from the get go. Mack/Carvalho now will face Columbus State's second doubles team of Tomaso Schold and Pietro Martinetti, who defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State's duo of Martin Jurkovic and Guillherme Dos Santos, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5, in the other semifinal Saturday afternoon.
Sunday's championship match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and fans can access live streaming of the match by clicking on the link to the right of the story. VSU had doubles teams win the ITA Cup in 2001 and 2011, as former Blazer duo of Tobias Huning and Marco Borgeus won and advanced to the "Super Bowl" where in Dallas, Texas, where they defeated a team from University of Texas and lost to a doubles team from Virginia Tech, in 2001. Exactly 10 years later, Blazer tandem of Christian Hanson and Luis Loefler won the ITA Cup and advanced to Flushing Meadows, N.Y., where they defeated a team from University of Tennessee and lost to a team from Cal. The event took place at the U.S. Open Tennis Complex.
