Blazer Men’s Golf Earns High Academic Marks; Hanson and Weathers Named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars

NORMAN, Okla. – Valdosta State men's golf junior Wesley Hanson and sophomore Chase Weathers were named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar Team, while the Blazers were named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) 2019-20 Academic Team.  
 
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. For 2019-20 only, they must participate in 40% of the team's competitive rounds.
 
An additional 404 student-athletes were recognized with the award in the second nomination period, with a total of 1,018 players earning the award. Of the 404 honorees in the second wave, 194 players were Division I selections, 87 in Division II, 81 in Division III, 27 from NAIA, and 11 from NJCAA. 2020 marks the first year in which Sophomores are eligible for the award.
 
As a team, the Blazers were one of 27 schools from NCAA Division II to earn All-Academic Team recognition with a 3.0 GPA or better.  Along with VSU, Lee and Delta State were the Gulf South Conference teams who had above a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the season.  In all, 250 schools from all levels of collegiate golf were named to the All-Academic Team with 95 schools earning Presidents Special Recognition Honors, finishing with a 3.5 GPA or above.
 
Hanson played in five tournaments for 15 rounds during the COVID-19 shortened season.  He had a 75.6 stroke average and fired a low-round of 71 at the Otter Invitational (Oct. 23-24).  The Macon, Ga., native, fired 14 rounds in the 70s for the season and fired a 54-hole base score of 221 at the Saint Leo Invitational (Feb. 24-25) tying for 15th.  
 
Not only did he excel on the course, but also in the classroom as he earned Third Team Academic All-America® as selected by CoSIDA.  He became the first Academic All-America selection as selected by CoSIDA in program history.  Hanson was named the GSC Spring Men's Golf Champion Scholar-Athlete of the Year and he earned GSC All-Academic honors.
 
Weathers played in six tournaments for the season for 17 rounds and fired a 75.6 stroke average.  He finished tied for 11th at the Saint Leo Invitational (Feb. 24-25) with a career-low 67 and a 218 score for 54-holes. 
 
The Saint Mary's, Ga., native, had 16 rounds in the 70s and the one 67 for the year.  He was named to the GSC Academic Honor Roll and fired a 54-hole low score of 14 at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational (Sept. 23-24).
