VALDOSTA, Ga. – It all came down to the No. 2 singles match as Valdosta State sophomore Birte Langestein battled back from an early deficit to win in the second set and then bageled Sofia Navarro in the third set, 6-0 for the win and a 4-3 victory over Auburn Montgomery Tuesday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play.

The Blazers (3-6, 2-0 GSC) swept the doubles point, including a thrilling win at No. 2 doubles as freshman Rachelle Starreveld and junior Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir upset No. 20 duo of Alba De la Torre and Julia Enderink, 7-6 in a 7-3 tiebreaker to clinch the point.

Heading into singles, Starreveld put VSU up 2-0 with a win at No. 5 as she downed Sofia Mustre, 6-3, 6-1.  De la Torre got the Warhawks on the board at No. 3 as she bested sophomore Eva Rivoal, 6-4, 6-2, but senior Estee Widdershoven downed Tonja Foessmeier, 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot for a 3-1 lead.

AUM (3-3, 1-1 GSC) came roaring back with wins at Nos. 4 and 6 to tie the match.  It all came down to the Langestein match at No. 2.  Navarro dominated the first set, 6-3, but Langestein responded in kind with a 6-3 win in the second set.  By that point, it was evident it would come down to her match.  She went out and blanked Navarro for the win.

With the win, VSU snapped a four-match skid and will host Lee on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.  The Blazers then head on the road and won't return home until Apr. 1, versus Alabama Huntsville in the final regular season home match of the season.
