VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team posted a 4-3 win over Gulf South Conference member Lee Saturday morning at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Blazers improved to 4-6 on the year and 3-0 in GSC play, while Lee fell to 3-5 and 1-3 in league play.
The Blazers won all three doubles matches to take the team point heading into singles. Freshman
Rachelle Starreveld put VSU up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Sierra Donaldson. The Flames cut the deficit in half as Micaela Belen Maiz won at No. 2 over sophomore
Birte Langestein, 6-2, 6-2, but sophomore
Eva Rivoal won at No. 3 over Matina Ujdur, 6-3, 6-4 for a 3-1 lead.
Lee pulled within 3-2 as Lauren Trammell won at No. 5 over junior
Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, but VSU senior Estee Widdershoven won at No. 1, also in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Carley Sickinger to win the match. Lee's Dana Moreno won in three sets at No. 6 over sophomore
Rachel Chan-Yaneff, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
The Blazers head to the USTA Training Center in Orlando, Fla., Sunday for a 12 p.m. match versus No. 1-ranked Barry, who is 11-0 on the year.
