VALDOSTA, Ga. – Over the next few weeks, the Valdosta State women's soccer team will unveil its VSU Women's Soccer All-Decade Team, beginning with goalkeeper on Nov. 2. On Nov. 9, the defenders will be announced, followed by midfielders on Nov. 16, forwards on Nov. 23 and a recap of the 11-member team on Nov. 30.
This fall would have been the tenth year of the program as women's soccer began at VSU in 2011. The COVID-19 Pandemic postponed the 2020 season to the spring of 2021. The Blazers are 82-64-20 (.554) all-time and have had double-digit wins each of the past three seasons and six times overall in nine years. VSU has won one Gulf South Conference title in 2014 and reached the NCAA postseason three consecutive years from 2012-2014.
Beginning with the all-decade team is former goalkeeper Olivia Mills. She began her career in 2011, and the Colorado Springs, Colo., native, immediately put her mark on VSU women's soccer. Mills patrolled between the pipes for four years as she leads the school-record book in career victories (45), shutouts (29), saves (277) and played over 7,112 minutes.
Mills finished with a school-record 1.02 goals against average for her career and tallied a career-high 87 saves as a senior in 2014 helping lead VSU to its first NCAA postseason win and Gulf South Conference title. Mills was named GSC Player of the Week four times during her career, named to the GSC All-Tournament Team in both 2011 and 2014, while earning first team all-conference honors in 2014 and second team honors in 2012. She also earned all-region honors in 2014.
She finished second in the GSC in goals against average (0.866) in 2012 for 52nd nationally and was third in the league in save percentage (.786) that season. Mills finished 26th nationally and third in the league in minutes logged in 2012 (1870:09). In 2014, she led the GSC in minutes played (1897:56) for 19th nationally, while she was fourth in the GSC in GAA at 0.854. Her 45 wins also is good for fourth all-time in GSC history, while her 29 shutouts are good for a tie for third in league history. Her 77 matches is fourth in GSC history.
Academically, Mills also was outstanding as she was named GSC Academic All-Conference in 2013 and 2014 and earned Academic Honor Roll accolades from 2012-2014.
Check back next Monday for the next unveiling of the VSU Women's Soccer All-Decade Team.
