Blazer Golf Team Finishes Fall Slate at UNG Fall Invitational

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Coming off a tie for fourth at the Camden Collegiate Oct. 5-6, the Valdosta State men's golf team returns to the links Oct. 26-27, at the UNG Fall Invitational at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga.  
 
VSU had an up-and-down tournament at the Camden Collegiate earlier this month as the team opened with a 299 score and followed with a 279 score, tying the second lowest team round score in program history.  The Blazers then finished with a 300 score for the final round as they tied with Flagler for fourth of 11 schools with a 54-hole score of 878.  South Carolina-Aiken won the tournament with an 856 score.  
 
Blazer sophomore Gage Smith paced the team with a 218 score on the par 70, 6,455-yard Camden Country Club. Senior Wesley Hanson fired a 219 score and finished tied for 19th.  Sophomore Davis Smith carded a 225 score, but fired a career-best 67 in the second round.
 
For the UNG Fall Invitational, a number of the teams who competed with VSU in the Camden Collegiate also will be participating in the UNG Fall Invitational including; USC Aiken, Lee, Flagler, North Georgia, Lander, Georgia Southwestern and Piedmont College.  Completing the 16-team field for Monday and Tuesday are; Clayton State, Columbus State, Delta State, Lincoln Memorial, Newberry, Shorter and West Georgia.
 
"The UNG event will be a new one for us," VSU head men's golf coach Jared Purvis said.  "We look forward to seeing several of the conference schools and finishing off the fall season on a positive note."
 
Located north of downtown Gainesville, Ga., and a short drive from Dahlonega, Chattahoochee Golf Club is the oldest golf club in northeast Georgia.  The Robert Trent Jones layout was renovated in 2006 and stretches to more than 7,000 yards.  Nestled on the banks of Lake Lanier, Chattahoochee Golf Club has been one of the premiere public golf courses in North Georgia since 1960 and remains home to 1973 Masters Champion Tommy Aaron.
 
Purvis' lineup begins with G. Smith at the top spot for the UNG Fall Invitational, followed by Hanson and freshman Ryan Pollman qualifies for his first tournament of the year at the No. 3 spot.  D. Smith is at No. 4 in the lineup followed by senior AJ Ouimet.  Four of the five Blazers played in the Camden Collegiate.
