Lady Blazers Head to Montevallo for Important GSC Matchup Saturday

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team heads on the road to face Montevallo in a key Gulf South Conference Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Saturday's game pits the Lady Blazers, who are 14-5 overall and 6-5 in GSC play against the 15-4 Falcons, who are 9-2 in league play.  Montevallo sits third in the conference standings behind league-leader Lee at 12-1 and Union is 11-2.  VSU currently is tied for sixth with West Georgia in the standings.  
 
Lee, who VSU defeated earlier this season for the Flames' only loss of the season, is the only team ranked or receiving votes in the WBCA Top 25 this week, while the Flames are fourth in D2SIDA Top 25.  Union is receiving votes in the D2SIDA poll.  In the D2SIDA South Region rankings, Lee leads the way and Union is third.  Delta State sits fifth in the poll, while Montevallo is seventh, West Georgia is eighth and VSU is ninth.  
 
The Falcons enter after an 85-80 win at West Alabama on Thursday.  The Falcons had our players in double figures in the game led by 20 points from Shyan Flack, who went 9 of 14 from the field with a triple and a free throw.  Aaliyah Rice had 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the game as UM raced out to a 20-9 lead through the first quarter, only to see the Tigers post a 22-11 second quarter for a tie game at halftime.  UM outscored UWA by five points in the second half for the win.  
 
Montevallo is led this season by Flack who is averaging a team-high 15.8 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game.  She is 127 of 242 (.545) from the field and 41 of 64 from the line (.641).  Flack has 41 assists for second on the team and 26 steals for third on the squad.  Kiya Sain is second in scoring at 10.8 points per game, while Rice is third in scoring at 10.2 points per contest as she is second on the team in made field goals with 76.  Paige Ward leads the team with 48 made triples.  
 
As a team, the Falcons are shooting .408 from the field on 512 of 1256, while they have drained 131 treys for a .304 average and are 254 of 376 from the line (.676).  UM is averaging 38.9 rebounds per game and 74.2 points per game, while allowing 66.9 points per game and 43.3 rebounds per game.  UM is holding teams to a .395 average from the field and a .291 clip from beyond the arc for the season.  
 
The Falcons are third in the GSC in scoring offense (74.2), while they are second in the league in 3-point field goal defense, holding teams to the .291 clip.  UM is 28th nationally in turnover margin at 4.79, while it is 36th nationally in turnovers forced at 20.6 per game as both lead the league.  Individually, Flack is fifth in the league in blocked shots (19), fourth in field goals made (127), fifth in field goal percentage (.525) and fifth in offensive rebounds per game at 3.1.  Marisa Snodgrass is third in the league in assists with 81, while she is fourth in steals (48). Ward is third in the league in made 3-pointers with 48.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with Montevallo 23-7 and 9-6 in Montevallo.  The Lady Blazers have won 11-straight in the series and 14 of 15 dating back to Feb. 17, 2003.  VSU held UM to 38 points in the meeting in Montevallo last season on Jan. 24, 2019, with a 47-38 victory marking the fewest points allowed in the series. 
 
The Lady Blazers enter the game winners of their last two games, including a 77-51 decision against Auburn Montgomery last Saturday.  This will be VSU's third game since Jan. 18 as the team has been idle each of the last two Thursdays.  In the game against AUM, the Lady Blazers had four players in double figures led by 19 points from junior Kayla Bonilla and senior Cheray Saunders.  Freshman Kendall Bollmer drained four triples in the first half for 12 points as VSU raced out to a 46-18 lead at intermission and never looked back.  
 
For the season, Bonilla leads the team averaging 19.0 points per game for third in the league and 32nd nationally.  Bonilla is 113 of 242 from the field (.467), while she is 33 of 96 from beyond the arc (.344) and 64 of 85 from the line (.753).  She has a team-high 64 assists and is second in steals with 37.  Saunders is second in scoring at 15.7 points per game.  She is 113 of 232 from the field (.487), while she is 65 of 97 from the line.  Saunders leads the team in rebounding at 6.3 per game and in steals with 45 for fifth in the league.  Bernard leads the team with 35 made triples this season.  
 
As a team, the Lady Blazers are shooting .436 from the field on 496 of 1137, for third in the GSC and 59th nationally.  The team is 144 of 398 from beyond the arc for a .362 clip, for second in the league and 27th nationally, and is 245 of 351 from the line (.698).  VSU is averaging 37.7 rebounds per game, while allowing 39.6 per contest.  The Lady Blazers are scoring 72.7 points per game and allowing 63.3. VSU is holding teams to a .369 clip from the field for fifth in the league, while teams are shooting a .292 clip from beyond the arc and .670 from the line.  
 
Following the game, VSU returns home to host Shorter at 8 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the Complex and West Georgia on Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.
