Soccer Heads to Albany State for Wednesday Evening Matchup

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Coming off a 2-0 win at Young Harris on Sunday, the Valdosta State women's soccer team continues on the road on Wednesday as it travels up the road to Albany State for a 6 p.m. kick.
 
The Blazers (1-2) were led by two goals from senior Ashley Lewis in the win at Young Harris.  She had a pair of outstanding scores in the first half as she had four shots with three on frame and the two goals for the match. Sophomore Lauren Hicks and freshman Mallory Johnson each had assists on the goals as Lewis recorded her school-record 23rdand 24thgoals, while upping her record-book leading points to 51.
 
Junior Caroline Embler had her first clean sheet of the season with two saves for her eighth shutout of her career.  Senior Taylor Snell had three shots and one on frame, Hicks added two shots and one on goal in the match.  It marked the first meeting on the pitch between VSU and YHC.  
 
Albany State enters at 2-1 on the year with wins over Spring Hill (4-2) and Auburn Montgomery (3-1), while dropping its last outing 5-0 to West Florida.  The Golden Rams will open the home slate on Wednesday with the Blazers and have scored seven goals on the year with 49 shots and 27 on goal.  The team has five assists and 19 saves, while going 1-1 in penalty kicks. 
 
Thuto Ramafifi leads the team with four goals and two assists this season.  She has 13 shots with six on goal, two game winners and is 1-1 in PK's. Aliyah Armijo is second in scoring with three goals on shots and she leads the team with eight shots on frame. In goal, Maria Bacillo has logged all 270 minutes, allowing eight goals with a 2.67 goals against average.  She has 19 saves and faced 61 shots.  
 
Last season, VSU opened the year with a 5-0 victory over Albany State as Lewis and Hicks each had two goals in the game, while senior Riley Tennant added the other score.  VSU outshot the Golden Rams 26-2 and 12-1 in shots on goal, while recording 11 corner kicks in the contest.  
 
Following the game on Wednesday, the Blazers return with over a week off until they open the 2019 Gulf South Conference slate on Sept. 27 and Sept. 29, versus Montevallo and Auburn Montgomery, respectively, at the VSU Soccer Field.
