Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the fifth season in a row, the No. 16 Valdosta State men's tennis team will be playing for the Gulf South Conference title as it downed No. 4-seed Lee Friday, 4-0. The Blazers will face No. 2-seed West Florida for the automatic berth into the NCAA South Regional at 11 a.m. ET Saturday morning.
VSU won the doubles point at Nos. 2 and 3 as senior
Jordi Mas and sophomore
Florian Simbozel won, 6-1 at No. 2 and senior Xavi Pineda and freshman
Robert Cizek won at No. 3, 6-2.
Simbozel won at No. 2, 6-0, 7-5, while junior
Yohan Nguyen won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4 and junior
Axel Holm won at No. 5, 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match. Results of the other matches were not readily available.
VSU and UWF had a great match earlier in the year in Valdosta as VSU won 4-3, clinching on the final match in singles. Pineda won at No. 4 as he downed Robin Rafaitin in straight-sets to tie the match at three. Holm then provided the heroics as he battled back from a 6-4 loss in the opening set and won 7-6 in the second set. He prevailed 6-4 in the third set for the upset win as VSU was ranked 39
th at the time and UWF was eighth in the ITA rankings.
Not only is this the fifth-straight year VSU has played in the conference championship match, but also the fifth-straight year against UWF as the teams are tied 2-2 during the span with VSU winning last season, 5-2. Both teams have won 12 conference tournament championship in each program's history for the most of any in the league. This marks the ninth-straight year UWF has made the championship match.
