Blazers Turn Back Augusta in Midweek Game, 11-4

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind 16 hits and 11 runs, the Valdosta State baseball team continued its strong offensive play with an 11-4 win over Augusta Tuesday evening at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

The Blazers (18-16) tallied the 11 runs for their third game in the last four of double-digit runs on 16 hits and had two errors, while the Jaguars (16-19) scored four runs on seven hits with four errors.  VSU senior Josh Broughton went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBI, including a home run in the win, while senior DJ King was 3 for 5 with a run scored and two RBI with two doubles.

In the top of the first, a Blazer miscue helped plate a run as Patrick Watson doubled home the run on a 1-2 count with two away for a 1-0 Jaguar lead.  A hit batsmen and RBI double from junior Jowenrick Daantji plated a run for the Blazers in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.  Senior Josh Broughton plated Daantji for a 2-1 VSU lead.

The Jaguars loaded the bases with two out in the top of the third, courtesy of a pair of walks and Watson's second hit of the game.  Junior Alex Tyson got a fielder's choice as Augusta left the bags full.  Broughton belted his second home run of the season for a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

With two out in the top of the fourth, a double from Ben Markiewicz and a RBI single from Harrison Moore, made the score 3-2.  In the top of the fifth, Augusta put two on with two out off VSU junior reliever Ethan Koehler, but Koehler came back with a backwards K for the final out as the Jaguars stranded eight runners through five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, VSU used a single from sophomore Seth Caballes and a great bunt single with an error putting runners at second and third with nobody out.  Daantji hit a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.  Brougton singled to center for a RBI and a 5-2 lead.  Senior DJ King ground out to first for a RBI as Broughton scored from second for a 6-2 lead.

VSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out as AU went to the bullpen in favor of Zack Gobel.  A ground out RBI from senior Mack Hathcock plated the seventh run of the game for a 7-2 lead.  The Blazers began the bottom of the seventh with a single and a double and junior Logan Stephens plated a run and junior Jordan Holt hit a sacrifice fly for a 9-2 and, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior Andrew Williamson for a 10-2 score.  VSU added a run in the bottom of the eighth for an 11-2 score.

The Jaguars put two on with one out in the top of the ninth.  Mason Robertson single to right, plating a run for an 11-3 score.  An error on a fielder's choice plated the second run of the inning for an 11-4 and the final margin.

VSU heads to Montevallo for a key Gulf South Conference series this weekend as Chris Caray will have play-by-play coverage of the game on 92.1 WDDQ FM.  Check back with vstateblazers.com for links to live stats, audio/video streaming, ticket information and more for the upcoming series.
