VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team ran its winning streak to five games as it swept a doubleheader from visiting Christian Brothers Saturday at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park. VSU won the opener 8-4 and battled back from a 5-0 deficit in the nightcap for a 10-9 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh.
The series concludes Sunday now at 10 a.m. at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park as there is a threat of inclement weather in the afternoon so the game was pushed forward. It will be Free Ball Sunday at the park as admission to the game will be free. There will be live stats of the game Sunday, but unfortunately no video/audio streaming Sunday. Valdosta State 8, Christian Brothers 4 (Game 1)
CBU (8-28, 4-19 GSC) used three-straight singles to begin the top of the second for a 1-0 lead as Garrett Reason-Kerkhoff singled through the left side on a 0-2 count for the RBI and a 1-0 lead. In infield bunt loaded the bases for the Bucs. Jeff Goodwin plated a two RBI single to left center for a 3-0 lead. VSU made an early move to the bullpen as junior
Tristan Cone was relieved by junior
Bryce Van Horn. It was Cone's shortest start of the season. Van Horn got a batter's interference for the second out and a pop out to end the threat.
With one out in the bottom of the third, a hit batsman and a single through the right side from senior
Josh Broughton put two on base. Junior
Jowenrick Daantji doubled down the left field line for a 3-1 score. Senior
DJ King hit a high chopper into center field, plating two runs tying the game at three.
The Bucs put two on with nobody out in the top of the fourth on a single and a hit batsmen. The Blazers once again went to the bullpen as junior
Sean Gabel relieved Van Horn. CBU loaded the bases and a pair of miscues led to one run, but VSU limited the damage as the Bucs left the bags full.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Broughton took CBU hurler Gil Erwin yard for a 4-4 score as it was Broughton's third round-tripper of the season.
The Bucs loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with two out and Gabel drew a 3-0 count to Kyle Hindman. Gabel battled back to a 3-2 count and fanned Hindman looking to end the frame as it marked the third time CBU had the bags full and second time it left them full.
In the top of the seventh, a single and a walk put two on for the Bucs with one out. A ground out to first put the runners at second and third. On a 3-2 count, Gabel came up with the final strikeout of the inning, but it was on a wild pitch as Jeff Goodwin reached first to load the bases for the fourth time in the game for the Bucs. VSU made its third pitching change of the game as senior
Call Graham relieved Gabel. Graham retired CBU leadoff hitter Jared Cramer on three pitches as the Bucs left the bases loaded once again and stranded 12 runners to that point.
VSU (23-17, 11-11 GSC) junior
Logan Stephens began the bottom of the seventh with a double to left and senior
Mack Hathcock drew the one out walk. Broughton hit a double to right as neither the second baseman nor right fielder called each other off with the ball bouncing between them, plating a run for the Blazers' first lead of the game at 5-4. A wild pitch plated the second run of the inning for a 6-4 lead. Daantji hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-4 lead.
Back-to-back singles in the top of the eighth put runners at second and third for CBU with two away as VSU brought in senior
Trevin Eubanks. Eubanks got a ground out to shortstop to get out of the jam as CBU left 14 stranded to that point.
A pair of great sacrifice bunts put two on second and third for the Blazers in the bottom of the eighth with one out. Following a fielder's choice out, sophomore
Seth Caballes walked to load the bases. Caballes then got plunked with Erwin's 114
th pitch of the game for an 8-4 score.
VSU retired the Bucs in the ninth for its third-straight win. The Blazers had eight runs on eight hits with two errors, while CBU had four runs on 11 hits with two errors. Broughton was 3 for 5 for the Blazers with three runs scored, two RBI, a home run and a double.
Graham (2-1) took the win in relief. Erwin (1-8) took the loss for CBU in a complete game, going eight innings, allowing eight hits, eight earned runs, walked three and fanned six.
Valdosta State 10, Christian Brothers 9 (Game 2)
In the nightcap, VSU junior hurler
Jonathan Gettys walked the first three batters of the inning and then, after a strikeout, walked in a run for a 1-0 CBU lead. Gettys got his second strikeout and VSU went to the bullpen in favor of junior
Alex Tyson. Tyson walked his first batter for the second run of the game. Luke Wewers hit a bases clearing single and error for a 5-0 lead as CBU scored five runs in the inning on just one hit.
VSU loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning. Junior
Noah Wilkes got hit with a pitch plating the first run of the game for the Blazers. A fielder's choice out plated the second run of the inning. Hathcock singled and advanced to second on the throw, plating the third run of the inning. A wild pitch followed, plating the fourth run. CBU went to the bullpen in favor of Nick Myers to replace starter Jonathan Baldelli as both starters didn't survive two innings. Broughton singled home two runs through the left side for a 6-5 VSU lead as the Blazers battled all the way back in the frame. A ground out to third plated the seventh run of the inning for a 7-5 lead.
CBU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third as freshman
Heston Mosley entered the game for the Blazers on the mound. Keagan Voss singled to short, plating a run for a 7-6 VSU lead. A sacrifice fly tied the game at seven with two away. Jared Cramer singled home two runs for a 9-7 CBU lead as VSU once again went to the bullpen in favor of junior
Tyler Moore.
With two out in the bottom of the third, Daantji laced a RBI triple to right center for a 9-8 deficit. Broughton singled to left, tying the game at nine. In the top of the fifth, VSU came up with a great defensive play as shortstop
DJ King came up with a great pick and throw to first for the third out as CBU had two on base in the frame. CBU had a great catch in left field at the wall by Kyle Hindman, robbing Broughton of a potential double in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the seventh a leadoff walk chased Cain from the game as Broughton moved from third to pitch for the Blazers. Brougton fanned his first batter followed by an intentional walk. A wild pitch put the go ahead run at third. VSU turned a double play to get out of the inning on a great throw from Stephens in left field to first base for the twin killing to get out of the inning as CBU had the hit and run going.
CBU changed pitchers to start the bottom of the seventh as Blake Dallas walked junior
Noah Wilkes to begin the frame. A fielder's choice followed for the first out, but an error put two on for the Blazers with one out. Daantji hit a bloop-double to short right field for the game winning RBI and a 10-9 score.
For the nightcap, the Blazers scored ten runs on 11 hits with three errors, while CBU had nine runs on seven hits with two errors.
Broughton (1-0) earned his first win in relief, going the final inning with a walk and a strikeout. Dallas (1-2) took the loss for the Bucs, going 0.1 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run with one walk. Broughton finished the day going 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Daantji was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
