MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Auburn Montgomery Thursday afternoon. VSU had wins at the top two singles positions for its two points in the match.
In doubles, AUM's duo of Alba De La Torre and Sofia Mustre downed VSU freshmen

Rachel Chan-Yaneff at No. 3, while VSU evened the doubles at No. 1 as senior

VSU tied the match at No. 1 singles as Widdershoven used a 7-6 win in the first set and won 6-3 in the second for a 1-1 score. Barta claimed a win at No. 2 for the Blazers as she defeated Petri in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 for the second point for VSU after AUM already clinched the match. Brynjarsdottir and Rivoal each had three-set matches, but each lost the final set at Nos. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
The Blazers have four matches remaining and stand at 3-12 overall and 3-4 in Gulf South Conference play. AUM is 7-10 and 5-2 in league play, but is not eligible for the GSC Championship this season. VSU needs to finish the regular season strong in the final four matches this weekend in Pensacola to ensure it of a berth in the GSC Championship.
VSU battles Mississippi College Friday at 4 p.m. ET, followed by matches Saturday at 1 p.m. ET versus Delta State and at 4 p.m. ET versus Christian Brothers. The Blazers then will face West Georgia Sunday at 10 a.m. ET to conclude the regular season.
