Tennis Teams Conclude Regular Season This Weekend

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams conclude the regular season this weekend with matches at Auburn Montgomery on Thursday and then matches in Pensacola, Fla., this weekend.  
 
The Blazer men's tennis team, ranked 21stin the latest ITA Division II rankings, takes its Gulf South Conference league-leading 6-0 record into a match Thursday at Auburn Montgomery at 3 p.m. ET.  Following that match, VSU will face Mississippi College on Friday in Pensacola, followed by matches with Delta State and Christian Brothers on Saturday.
 
VSU enters the week at 8-3 and has won eight-straight matches and is 6-0 in GSC play, leading West Florida by a half game in the conference standings, after the head-to-head victory over the Argos Mar. 31.  Auburn Montgomery sits third in the standings at 4-1 and is 9-5 overall.  The Blazers are looking for their first regular season title since 2011.  Mississippi College is 5-10 overall and 3-4 in league play, while Delta State is 9-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play and Christian Brothers is 11-10 and 1-6 in the GSC. 
 
AUM has won five-straight matches for the third-longest current winning streak in the league as Lee is second at seven matches.  The Warhawks had the Delta State match postponed on Sunday as it is the second league match AUM has had postponed this season.  
 
Heading into the final week for the Blazers, who already have clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Championship, scheduled for May 2-4 in Montgomery, Ala., are led this season in doubles by freshman Florian Simbozel and senior Jordi Mas at No. 2 doubles as the duo is a perfect 7-0 on the year and 6-0 in conference play.  
 
In singles, Junior Yohan Nguyen leads the team with a 9-2 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the GSC at No. 3.  Junior Axel Holm, who earned GSC Player off the Week honors for his three-set win at No. 5 over West Florida to clinch the match last week, is 6-3 and 5-0 in GSC Play. Senior Jordi Mas is 21stin singles in the latest ITA rankings as he is 6-5 at the top spot and 5-1 in GSC play.  Senior Xavi Pineda is 23rdnationally and 7-3 at No. 4 singles, while going 5-1 in league play.  
 
On the women's side, the Blazers are 3-11 overall and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play.  VSU won its first three matches in league play and dropped its last three.  The Blazers will play the same schedule as the men's team, but will also face West Georgia on Sunday to conclude the regular season.  
 
In the league standings, VSU sits sixth heading into the final weekend and has a chance to really enhance its record and qualify for the eight-team conference tournament.  Auburn Montgomery is 4-2 in conference play and 6-10 overall.  Mississippi College is 6-1 in conference play, sitting second in the standings and 12-4 overall, while West Georgia is 7-5 and 2-3 in conference play.  Delta State is 4-12 and 1-4 in league play, while Christian Brothers is 5-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play heading into the week. 
 
In singles, junior Estee Widdershoven leads the team in conference play with a 5-1 record at the top spot in the order.  She is 5-7 overall, while freshman Eva Rivoal and freshman Birte Langestein each are 3-3 in league play.  Langestein is 4-6 at the No. 3 spot, while Rivoal has played at Nos. 3-5 this season. In doubles, freshman Rachel Chan-Yaneff and Langestein are 3-5 at No. 3 doubles this season and 2-4 in conference play to lead the team.
