Cooper Cain was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced this week.
Cain, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., tossed his first no-hitter in the Blazers' 8-1 victory on Sunday over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan. Cain went all seven innings, allowing one unearned run, walked three and fanned a career-high 14.
He earned Co-Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week honors and NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week accolades for his efforts. Cain is 2-1 this year in four starts with one complete game and a 2.25 ERA. He has pitched 20 innings, allowing nine hits, seven runs – five earned, walked 11 and fanned a team-high 35 as teams are hitting .129 against him.
The Blazers return to Gulf South Conference action this weekend as they host Union for a three-game series at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
