PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team had a cold shooting night as it fell at West Florida 69-39, Thursday evening in Pensacola, Fla., as the teams split the two meetings this season. Senior
Sonya Franklin was the lone Lady Blazer in double figures with 12 points.
Franklin was the bright spot for the Lady Blazers as she was 4 of 13 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line for 12 points, while no other Lady Blazer had more than six points. Senior
Crystal Townsend finished with six points and seven rebounds.
VSU (17-9, 11-7 GSC) shot a season-low 21.2 percent on 14 of 66 from the field, while going a season-low 1 of 22 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 from the line. The Lady Blazers held a 21-14 lead in offensive with 21 rebounds on the offensive end for a 14-13 lead in second chance points. UWF held a 47-33 lead in rebounding and recorded 33 defensive rebounds in the game.
UWF (22-4, 16-3 GSC) shot 45.5 percent on 25 of 55, while going 5 of 15 from range and 14 of 15 from the line. Anna Hall had 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Toni Brewer had 19 points to lead all scorers.
VSU never led in the game and was just 3 of 10 from the field in the opening frame as UWF raced out to a 21-8 lead through the first quarter. Both teams really struggled in the second stanza as they were a combined 5 of 29 from the field for the frame with a combined 15 points. The Lady Blazers trailed 29-15 at half.
A big third quarter from UWF was key in the game as it outscored VSU 22-13 and 18-11 in the fourth as VSU was 8 of 40 shooting in the second half. Junior
Nari Garner hit the lone triple for the Lady Blazers in the second quarter.
