VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team dropped a 64-58 decision to Alabama Huntsville Sunday afternoon at The Complex. VSU fell to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. UAH improved to 4-4 on the year and 2-1 in league play.
VSU led 29-25 at intermission, but the Chargers used a 19-9 third quarter and outscored the Lady Blazers 39-29 in the second half for the win. VSU junior
Kayla Bonilla led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds, along with two assists and three steals on 6 of 12 from the field, 2 of 6 from range and 3 of 5 from the line. Senior
Cheray Saunders scored 15 points on 6 of 11 from the field with three free throws, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
The Blazer shot 40.8 percent from the field on 20 of 49, while going 5 of 18 from range and 13 of 19 from the line. A total of 19 miscues by the Lady Blazers proved costly, as UAH held a 17-9 lead in points off turnovers for the game.
For the Chargers, Katie Speegle had a game-high 24 points on 9 of 14 from the field with a triple and 5 of 8 from the line with eight rebounds. Aryn Sanders added 17 points and nine rebounds for the game with a game-high six steals. The Chargers shot 48 percent on 24 of 50 from the field, draining four triples and were 12 of 19 from the line. UAH led 36-28 in points in the paint for the contest.
The teams played to an 18-18 first quarter in a very back-and-forth affair. VSU built a five-point cushion early in the second quarter and Saunders pushed the lead to 28-22 on a free throw with 3:20 left in the half. Sanders scored the final five points of the half for the Chargers for a 29-25 score at intermission.
Sanders tied the game at 33 as UAH began the game on an 8-4 run, but a big triple in the corner from junior
Delaney Bernard gave the Blazers the lead back at 36-33. UAH answered with a triple from Selena Pruitt and took the lead on a steal and layup from Sanders at 38-36 with 4:36 left in the quarter. UAH outscored VSU 11-2 since the score was tied at 33 through the rest of the frame.
The Chargers kept the lead for the remainder of the game as VSU cut a double-digit deficit to five on a charity toss from Bonilla at 56-51 with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter and Saunders scored on a fast break for a 58-53 deficit with 1:12 remaining. Bonilla had a great look at a triple, which went off the front of the iron with 45 seconds left and an immediate foul gave Speegle two free throws for a 60-53 score.
Bernard hit another triple for a 60-54 score, but senior
Nari Garner's triple wouldn't go down as Speegle and Sanders made six of eight free throws in the final minute to seal the 64-58 victory.
The Lady Blazers return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. at The Complex versus No. 5-ranked Lee University and then will face Thomas University on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday at 2 p.m., all at The Complex to conclude the 2019 portion of the schedule.
