VALDOSTA, Ga. – A triple double from Valdosta State men's basketball senior
Darrell Jones and a dominating rebounding performance highlighted the No. 12-ranked Blazers' 100-68 victory over Brewton-Parker Tuesday evening at The Complex.
Jones finished the game with 11 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and a career-best ten assists, while senior
Clay Guillozet finished with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds. Senior
Bryce Smith finished with 20 points, while sophomore
Imoras Agee added 13 points. VSU tallied a season-high 59 rebounds and 19 on the offensive end as Guillzoet and Jones combined for 30 rebounds and nine offensive boards.
Guillozet was 11 of 20 from the field with two triples and went 2 of 3 from the line, while recording four steals. He tied his career-high with 11 made field goals as he also had 11 makes on Jan. 27, 2018. Jones was 3 of 7 from the field, while going 5 of 6 from the line and pulled down 12 defensive rebounds of his 16 for the game, while dropping ten assists of the Blazers 21 dimes. It marked the first triple double for the Blazers since former Blazer Josh Sparks had ten blocks, 15 rebounds and 23 points at Fort Valley State on Dec. 11, 2012.
VSU went 36 of 83 (.434) from the field, while going 10 of 34 from downtown and 18 of 25 from the line. The Blazers dominated the glass to the tune of 59-37 and pulled down 40 defensive rebounds. The red and black forced 21 turnovers and recorded 12 steals.
Brewton-Parker, who was using this game as an exhibition, was led by 17 points from Jack Gray on 6 of 9 from the field with three triples and two free throws. Leondrae Christie and Jeffrey Hodges added 10 points each. The Barons shot 25 of 70 from the field with 10 made triples and were 8 of 9 from the line. The Barons led for all of 58 seconds in the game and the contest was tied for a total of 57 seconds.
The first ten minutes saw the Barons hang with the Blazers, but a layup from junior
Burke Putnam, followed by a layup from junior
Cam Hamilton and a Jones layup quickly pushed the lead to seven at 27-20. Hamilton then hit a triple and followed with a layup for a 32-20 score and an 11-0 run.
The Barons cut the deficit back to seven with 5:55 left in the half at 39-32, but VSU closed the half on a 21-10 run for a 60-42 lead at intermission. For the half, VSU shot an even 50 percent from the field with eight buckets from range and 10 of 15 from the line. Smith had 18 points in the first half, while Guillozet had ten.
Brewton-Parker kept the deficit between 18-23 for much of the first ten minutes of the second half, but a 16-3 run by the Blazers made the score 96-62 with 4:30 left on a layup from Guillozet. Putnam later hit a triple for an even 100 points as the Blazers eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second time this season. Nine of the ten Blazers who saw action in the game tonight scored.
VSU returns to the court in its first road game of the season Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Albany State. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Valdosta on 1150 AM and 96.1 FM with Mike Chason and
Bryce Koon having the call of the game. VSU downed Albany State last weekend in Valdosta, 93-87.
