VALDOSTA, Ga. – Outscoring visiting Montevallo 49-17 in the second half and using a 22-1 run in the fourth quarter, sparked the Valdosta State women's basketball team to its fourth-straight victory Thursday evening at The Complex, with an 83-44 victory. Senior
Crystal Townsend recorded her third double-double of the season behind a season-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. The 83 points by the Lady Blazers marked a season-high.
VSU improved to 15-6 overall and 9-4 in Gulf South Conference play, while Montevallo fell to 10-10 and 6-6 in league play. The Lady Blazers remained in fourth place in the league standings after the win, three games behind league-leader Union.
Townsend went a season-best 9 of 17 from the field with two triples and four free throws, while the 12 rebounds marked her fourth double figure rebounding game of the season. Sophomore
Kayla Bonilla added 12 points with five assists and four steals.
VSU, who defeated Montevallo exactly one week ago, 47-38, held the Falcons under 30 percent shooting once again. UM was just 13 of 47 (.277) from the field, while going 4 of 20 from beyond the arc and 14 of 20 from the line. The Falcons were 12 of 54 from the field for 22.2 percent a week ago. UM had 20 turnovers, which VSU turned into 28 points, while the Lady Blazers held a 47-27 lead in rebounding and 21-11 on the offensive end for a 20-5 lead in second chance points. Just like last week, UM didn't have a player reach double figures in scoring.
The Lady Blazers shot 48.4 percent on 31 of 64, while draining nine triples to tie their season-high. VSU was 12 of 17 from the line, while recording 17 assists, three blocks and nine steals.
Montevallo battled back from a six-point deficit in the first quarter with a 7-0 run to end the frame over the final 3:16 for a 15-14 lead after one period. In the second, senior
Sonya Franklin scored in the paint just four seconds in as VSU never relinquished the lead the rest of the game. Senior
Shon Kitchens buried a triple for a 23-17 lead with 7:34 left in the half and then Townsend scored for a 29-21 lead and the largest of the half with 3:18 left. She then had the final bucket of the half for a 34-27 advantage at intermission. Townsend had 15 points in the first half as the only player in double figures.
The Lady Blazers blew the game open in the third, using a 9-1 run over the first 6:30 capped with a triple from Townsend and a 43-28 lead. Franklin hit a bucket to end the scoring for the period as VSU outscored UM 13-5 for the frame. The Falcons were just 1 of 12 from the field for the third quarter, 0 of 4 from beyond the arc and 3 of 4 from the line as the VSU "D" really upped the pressure.
VSU completely dominated the fourth quarter as it scored its highest quarter output of the season with a 36-12 advantage for the 39-point win. VSU opened the quarter with a 16-0 run and a 61-35 lead with 5:47 left. VSU extended the run to 22-1 at 67-36 before UM hit its first field goal of the frame by Jordan Jones with 4:01 left. The Lady Blazers went 12 of 16 from the field in the quarter, 4 of 6 from beyond the arc and 8 of 12 from the line. UM was just 3 of 12 from the field in the frame, 1 of 5 from range and scored five of eight free throws.
The Lady Blazers have Saturday off as they will return to the road next week at West Georgia and Shorter to open the month of February.
