Lady Blazers Grind Out 47-38 Victory at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team posted a 47-38 win at Montevallo on Thursday evening as it improved to 13-6 overall and 7-4 in Gulf South Conference play.  VSU senior Maddy Corazza posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

The Lady Blazers shot 15 of 48 from the field for 31.3 percent, while going 5 of 14 from beyond the arc and 12 of 22 from the line.  VSU dominated the glass, out rebounding the Falcons 49-32 and 18-13 on the offensive end.  Montevallo (10-8, 6-4 GSC) was didn't have a player in double figures as it shot 22.2 percent from the field on 12 of 54, going 4 of 20 from beyond the arc and 10 of 15 from the line.

VSU held a 22-11 lead in points off turnovers and 17-10 in second chance points as the Lady Blazers led for 38:03 minutes and never trailed.  Sophomore Kayla Bonilla added 10 points and a game-high five steals, while senior Sonya Franklin had a game-high 13 points off the bench.  UM's Paige Ward and Nautika Philpot each had eight points to lead the Falcons.

The Lady Blazers held UM to a season-low shooting and the 38 points allowed by VSU marked the fewest in a game this season and the fewest since a 70-35 win on Dec. 11, 2017, against Thomas University.

VSU scored eight of the first ten points in the game, but a quick triple from Philpot pulled UM within 8-5 with 6:41 left in the first quarter.  A triple by Bonilla stretched the lead back to six at 14-8 with 56 seconds left in the frame.

Aaliyah Rice tied the game at 14 with 6:12 left in the half as the Falcons scored the first six points of the second quarter, but VSU freshman Kayla Frey put the Lady Blazers ahead with a free throw beginning a 14-4 run over the final 4:49 of the half for a 28-18 lead at intermission.

The Falcons cut the deficit to one at 28-27 with 5:06 left in the third on a triple from Ward, but Corazza scored two free throws at the other end, to erase a 9-0 run by the Falcons to begin the second half.  UM cut a five-point VSU lead to one with 1:55 left, but a triple from Bonilla with two seconds left in the quarter gave VSU a 35-31 lead.

Back-to-back triples by VSU pushed the lead to 10 at 41-31 with 8:21 remaining.  Corazza and Franklin each scored buckets throughout the frame to give VSU a 10-point cushion at different times as VSU went on for the 47-38 win.

The Lady Blazers continue on the road on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at Auburn Montgomery.  Links to live stats and audio/video streaming can be found on the women's basketball schedule page at vstateblazers.com.  The game also will be broadcast on 92.1 WDDQ with Spencer Van Horn having the call of the game.
