Blazers Sink the Mariners, 3-0

THE BASICS:

THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team completed its first home stand of the season with a 3-0 win over the visiting Coastal Georgia Mariners Wednesday evening.  The Blazers hit .211 for the match with 35 kills on 95 swings.  
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Behind a strong contingent of fans, including members of the VSU men's basketball team who had painted themselves for the game, VSU scored eight of the first ten points of the match helped out by service aces and miscues from the Mariners. 
  • Coastal Georgia battled back within 9-7 also on miscues by the Blazers, but three straight serves by junior Kayla Widera pushed the lead back to 12-8.
  • Later in the set, Coastal Georgia closed within 16-15, but a service error by the Mariners started a five-point run for the Blazers as VSU won 25-19.
  • In the second set, the Blazers once again jumped out to an early lead scoring 10 of the first 13 points using an 8-0 run en route to a 25-11 victory and a 2-0 lead.
  • The third was the most competitive as there were 10 tis and seven lead changes in the final frame alone.
  • This time, Coastal Georgia jumped out to an early lead, but the Blazers roared back tying the set at five.  
  • The Mariners rattled off six-straight points and built a 12-8 lead, but the Blazers had the answer as they again roared back tying the match at 12.  Coastal Georgia pushed the lead back to four with a kill from Azure Werner for an 18-14 score.
  • This time VSU answered back and took the lead as sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez rattled off four straight serves for a 19-19 score.  
  • A kill by senior Chloe Chubilleau gave VSU a 20-19 lead, but Coastal Georgia took a 23-2 lead on a kill from Sam Kelpler.  On the ensuing serve, Madie Bunge's serve went wide tying the match at 23.
  • VSU freshman Aurora Nero recorded two aces to win the match.  
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • VSU hit .500 in the second set with 12 kills in 22 attacks with just one error, while opening the match hitting .207.  
  • For the match, the Blazers had 15 errors as Reyes-Perez had 27 assists and reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week Jessie Mooney tallied a team-high 12 kills. 
  • Junior Dariah Powell had a team-high 11 digs.  Widera was in on five blocks with one solo and four assisted. 
  • No Mariner had double-digit kills, while Ashley Kot led the team with 29 assists and Y. Rios Gonzalez had a team-high ten digs.
  • VSU now is 2-0 all-time against Coastal Georgia as the teams last met in 2012.  
 
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Blazers head to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Converse Tournament Friday and Saturday.
  • There, the Blazers will face Converse, Limestone, North Greenville and Mars Hill.
  • VSU then returns home to open GSC play Tues., Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against Shorter at The Complex.
