The Lead: After battling adversity during a lightening delay, junior
Ashley Lewis scored the games only goal in the 92
nd minute of play, in overtime, to carry the Blazers to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Valdosta State and Alabama-Huntsville saw numerous opportunities to score, with both teams attempting 8 shots in the first half of play.
- VSU's Ashley Lewis lead the way in the first half with 3 shots, while three other Blazers saw chances.
- Goalkeeper Caroline Embler had four saves in the first half of the game while Megan Buford for UAH notched 3.
- VSU saw a string of shots to open the second half of play by Mallory McDaniel and Riley Tennant.
- Alabama-Huntsville used a corner kick as a late opportunity at the 65-minute mark, but only resulted in a header off the crossbar by Mia Jetsu.
- Still scoreless at the 79th minute, the Blazers saw an opportunity late as McKay Culberson and senior Carley Montgomery each saw a shot on goal.
- Montgomery gave the Blazers a final chance in regulation as she put up a perfect corner kick, but the team couldn't produce.
- In overtime, VSU's Ashley Lewis found the back of the net off the foot of freshman Kyleigh Reedy to give the Lady Blazers the victory. Lewis's 5 shots on goal to lead the team.
- Lewis's goal marked her seventh of the season, as she made her way to the top of the VSU record book for career goals scored with sixteen, currently.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In the first half of play, both VSU and UAH had 8 shots.
- Alabama Huntsville saw 5 corner kick opportunities in the first half of play while the Blazers had 3 off the foot of Savolainen.
- For the game, VSU had 19 shots with 8 on goal, while Alabama-Huntsville tallied 14 with 6 being on frame.
- The Lady Blazers totaled 9 corner kick opportunities and the Lady Chargers had 6.
- VSU had 6 saves in the game from Embler while Buford from UAH had 7.
- As for fouls, VSU racked up 9 in regulation and the Chargers received 5.
