THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team battled back from an early deficit for a 3-1 victory at Auburn Montgomery Friday evening behind double-doubles from freshman
Jessie Mooney, sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez and junior
Dariah Powell.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blazers trailed for much of the first set, but battled back to tie it at 17 with a four-point rally, and took the lead at 18-17.
- Later in the set, VSU pulled within 23-22, but AUM scored the final two points on an attack error and ace for a 25-22 win.
- VSU roared back in the second set, scoring 14 of the first 21 points, but AUM roared back scoring seven of the next 13 points for a 20-14 VSU lead.
- AUM pulled within 24-22 on a kill by Jaylyn Felder and a timeout by the Blazers.
- Out of the timeout, AUM had a service error ending the set in favor of the Blazers.
- The third set was tightly contested as AUM took a 20-18 lead, but three-straight kills from Lindsey Robinson gave VSU the lead at 21-20.
- AUM tied the set at 22 and then 23, but an attack error on the Warhawks gave VSU set point.
- The Warhawks tied the set at 24, but another attack error and kill from Mooney gave VSU a 2-1 lead at 26-24.
- The fourth set started much like the second with the Blazers having the momentum and scoring nine of the first 13 points.
- VSU extended the lead to 16-7, winning five of seven serves.
- AUM scored five-straight points on match point, but a kill from Mooney ended the match for a 25-19 win and Mooney's team-leading 15th kill of the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Blazers hit .188 for the match with 61 kills on 170 swings with 59 assists, 89 digs and 29 errors. VSU had 9.5 blocks for the match.
- AUM hit .110 for the match with 39 kills, 36 assists, 72 digs and 22 errors, while recording 11 blocks.
- Mooney tallied 15 kills and 11 digs as she hit .128, while Powell had 10 kills and 16 digs. It marked Mooney's second double-double and Powell's third.
- Reyes-Perez had 48 assists and 13 digs for her team-leading fifth double-double of the season.
- Freshman Aurora Nero paced the team with 28 digs, while senior Chloe' Chubilleau added 11 kills and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs.
